Question about Microwave Ovens

2 Answers

I have a whirlpool oven/microwave combo, model number GMC305PD. I had to replace the oven latch because it melted from doing a self clean (2nd time this happened in 2 years) Anyhow, when I was done the microwave wouldn't heat and smells and looks like smoke from the magnatron side of the microwave. I replaced the magnetron and the HV diode, but I still have the same smoking real bad. Is it a transformer of the HV cap?

I have a whirlpool oven/microwave combo, model number GMC305PD. I had to replace the oven latch because it melted from doing a self clean (2nd time this happened in 2 years) Anyhow, when I was done and put everything back together the microwave wouldn't heat and smells and looks like serious smoke from the magnatron side of the microwave. I replaced the magnetron and the HV diode, but I still have the same smoking real bad. Could it be a transformer or the HV cap? I tested all 3 transformers I could see and they courently test short. Of course, that doesn't mean one isn't on it's way out. Would the microwave not heat with a new HV diode, new magnetron and a transformer smoking like crazy? I'm not sure where to look or what to test with the meter. Thanks

It most likely is the transformer heating up. Look for discoloration on the transformer. Caps can burn up, but they usually swell up and explode or crack. Also, I've read that it isn't good to use the self clean function on many types of microwaves, as this can cause problems. This situation isn't normal, and you need to contact Whirlpool about this problem. I couldn't find your unit on a recall list, but perhaps it should be (some of the GSC models were on the list).
Here's Whirlpool's support page:

Good luck, hope this helps, and thanks for using FixYa.

Door error message on microwave whirlpool Gold rmc275pd

This indicates the door is not latching. The simplest fix is if it really isn't closed, and simply pressing on the door does the trick. Not so lucky? Latch mechanism itself may be dirty and not latching. Try cleaning it with standard spray kitchen cleaners and a good scrub, followed by a toweldry. Still no good? There's often an electronic interlock-- a place outside the latch, perhaps along the face of door, which must contact the body of the microwave oven. Again, try cleaning all possible contact areas. No? OK: microwaves are designed not to run without a tight seal to prevent emissions. perhaps the seal itself is damaged. Finally, and most unhappily, and expensively, the electronics module in the combo unit is shot. If the appliance is under warranty you're in like flynn; if it's relatively new but not under warranty, call the Whirlpool service 800 number and very politely but firmly remind them that this is really quite a new unit and certainly their products aren't meant to fail so soon... and surely they have a service bulletin because this can't have just happened to you... This will usually result in (oh happy day!) a free service call or (more common) a deal to sell the part at half price. Better than nothing!

Need to know how to self clean a whirlpool oven... Model number RF302BXDW it is suppose to be a self cleaner, but does not have a cleaning mode.

I checked the owners guide here:
https://www.whirlpool.com/digitalassets/MLPDF/Use%20and%20Care%20Guide%20-%203189066.pdf

The cleaning steps are on page 23 of the manual.

Note the comments about using a commercial oven cleaner

("Easy Off" is one oven cleaning product that works well)

One product I find that works well on all oven surfaces is Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner. I have a real hard time finding it in the USA stores. Product image and description Link below:

How do I use the self-cleaning function on my Whirlpool Super Capacity 465 self-cleaning oven?

If you just want to run the basic self-clean cycle. First remove the broiler pan and racks from the oven. Next clean any heavy spills up with a non-abrasive cleaner (do not use an oven cleaner). Clean the window of the oven door and the door frame (to the outside of the gasket). Then close the oven. If the oven has a touch-pad, press the Auto-clean pad on the oven followed by Start. The oven will automatically lock and then unlock when the oven has cooled after the cleaning cycle. (I'm less certain of the control settings for the dial type of oven control.)

In order to get your manual you need the full model number of the oven. This is on a plate located behind the storage door. This pdf, http://adcxns1.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/ca8e028c60d9804f85256a8c00621f04/$FILE/4322089.pdf , gives you a picture of where the model and serial numbers are is on page 4 as well as some of the information contained in the serial number on the subsequent pages.

Once you have your model number, go to http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/product_literature/search.jsp?siteCd=WHRCOM and enter the model number. This should let you get the manual specific to your oven.

I hope this helps.

Arching microwave oven

The area that has arced needs to be cleaned thoroughly, and if the paint is affected, it will need to be sanded smooth and cleaned with alcohol.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If the rack support is charred or melted, it will need to be replaced. It's best to replace them as a set.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.
