Question about Jenn-Air JCD2389G Side by Side Refrigerator

2 Answers

I have a Jenn Air side by side refrigerator with water and ice dispenser, which I bought new about nine years ago. I have three problems with it that may be related: The ice maker makes very small, hollow pieces of ice and seems to be intermittent, The water comes out very slow and sometimes stops completely and lastly, certain areas of the refrigerator side get so cold that they freeze my food - partciularly food in the middle/rear of the fridge, cheese/meat drawer etc. I was thinking they the heating element that keeps the water line from freezing may be bad, causing the water line to be semi frozen, also causing some ice build up near the air flow hole that cools the refrigerator side, which is what is freezing the food? Any thoughts or recommendations?

THe problem with the ice maker is that it's not making much ice at all AND the ice that it does make is small and hollow, not like a full solid piece of ice. The water from the dispenser flows with very low pressure and just a small, dribble-like stream. I replaced the water filter that goes inside the top of the refrigerator side, but that did not change anything. I'm thinking something is blocking the water from flowing properly, but not sure where it would be or why. Something frozen somewhere? Where would I look?

Hi,

Your three problems are interconnected to each one so solving one problem will solve all the issues.
Lets discuss about the first problem
Ice maker makes hallow ice.
1)For every 6 moths or 1 year you have to replace the filter. The decreased flow is caused due to filter problem. You said you cleaned the filter and the problem still persist.
2)Check the valve see the below picture how ice dispense parts interconnected. The
pat no 15 the valve which will be blocked by ice or dust you have to remove it.Can you see the valve 22 will connected down of water tub.SO check the valve is not frozen.
I have a Jenn Air - aab5010.png

Simple if the valve decreased flow or hollow cubes means there is some block.May be due
to dust or frozen ice.

Your freezer freezing too much. The heating element and thermostat and defrost system or interconnected for this purpose. The defrost timer plays a vital role.It is controlled by
Temperature control board.Do test it using continuity testing method to find it is defective or not.If you have multitester we can easily find it out.Mainly this board will
control the heating element. If the ice is frozen up then this will decrease the performance of the fridge.

1)First Check the back wall or floor of the freezer section for frost. The Freezer(evaporator) fan is running?.This fan problem is very hard to detect.
The DC motor for the fan wears out the RPM's are effected. It gives the illusion that it is running fine, but it doesn't have enough force to supply air circulation for both the freezer and the refrigerator See weather the condenser coil for
blockage from dust and the condenser fan is running.

2)The compressor vents cold air into the freezer. Occasionally the vent can become clogged with ice, food or other debris. Locate the vent and clear it. To remove ice, use a hair dryer set to "low". Using the high setting may cause damage to the components or interior of the refrigerator.

3)Test the evaporator fan.The evaporator fan circulates air over the refrigeration coils. The coils absorb heat and the chilled air is then circulated. If the fan does not operate, the freezer will not cool properly. The fan motor may have failed, but check first that something is not simply blocking the fan blade.

Simple solution:Switch off your system for 24 hours or more so all the frost will melt and the refrigerator will start working as normal. The blockage of the ice will be cleared.

post a comment for further assistance.
Thank you for using fixya have a nice day:-)

A customer reported this on epinions.com:
- Water and Ice work fine. I noted in another review a complaint of the feed tube plugging. We've had this happen only if you don't let all the crushed ice out. For me this has happened only about twice in a year and a half, and it's as simple as opening the freezer door and pulling the ice out of the chute.
This could be your problem with the ice cubes.
The freezing problem could be due to a faulty thermostat, bad damper, or bad control board. This blog talks about this problem also:
http://applianceguru.com/forum1/19972.html

BTW, here's the web review page:

To know which part is bad, one must observe the operation to know what's going on, or what's lacking, and thus causing it.
Here is a good website that has some general good stuff to refer to:

Good luck, hope this helps, and thanks for using FixYa.

We have a Jenn Air side by side, model JCD2389GEW. The ice dispensers work, the water does not. This started after I replaced the filter. I've checked and nothing is locked out. When you press the actuator pad to dispense water, you can hear a noise similar to a small pump which I assume is a solenoid attempting to open. Any ideas?

You could have a layer of solid ice at the bottom of your icetray. Remove icetray. Remove any ice in bottom. Reinstall. Be careful there is a connection on the rear of the icetray, you may have to turn it to get it to mesh correctly. Fill with ice and it should work fine. Good Luck.
