How to make the taskbar reappear when it disappears in Windows

Sometimes on a computer running Windows, an application will crash or an unstable process will lock up the system, and out of nowhere the taskbar that runs across the bottom of the screen will disappear. The rest of the desktop and all of your icons will probably still be visible -- it's only the taskbar that is gone. Without the taskbar, you can't access the Start menu or view the open programs in your system notification tray.

To get your taskbar and Start menu back without shutting down your computer, hit <CTRL><ALT><Delete> and then (depending on the version of Windows that you are running) choose the appropriate option to open the Task Manager. (In Windows XP Professional, for example, there is a button labeled "Task Manager".) When the Task Manager window appears, select File from the menu bar and then from the drop down menu click on "New Task (Run)". Type "explorer.exe" into the text bar and hit <Enter>. Windows will sort of "reset" itself, and the taskbar and Start button will reappear. (This may take a minute.)

Whatever caused the system to become unstable in the first place could easily happen again, so at this point it's a good idea to save any unsaved data, close all open applications, and then shut down and reboot your computer. If the same problem happens again, make a note of which programs you were running when it occurred, as it may be a resource conflict or compatibility issue that's causing the problem.

The taskbar is upside down and at the top of the screen

On Windows computers, you should have what is known as the taskbar. This is the gray strip that runs across the bottom of your computer and which displays icons for quickly accessing programs you frequently use. The taskbar also shows the "Start" menu, clock and icons for your Internet connections. Sometimes icons do not appear properly in the taskbar. This usually is because the computer is new and hasn't had icons placed in the taskbar manually, or because a default setting is off in the OS properties. Both are simple fixes.

1.Right-click the "Start" icon and select "Properties."

2.Select the "Taskbar" tab in the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialogue box.

3.Uncheck "Lock the taskbar" and "Auto-hide the taskbar." Check "Show Quick Launch." Since the Quick Launch box isn't available in some systems, you may need to right-click on the taskbar area, choose "Toolbars" and then select "Quick Launch."

4.Navigate to the programs you want to show on the taskbar through the "Start" menu or on your desktop. Right-click the program and drag it to the taskbar. Choose "Create shortcuts here" from the menu that appears. The icon for the program should appear in the taskbar.

Missing task bar - running vista

Sounds like explorer.exe is not running:

1. Hit Ctrl + Shift + Esc at same time.
2. Windows Task Manager should open.
3. Hit File on top menu.
4. Select New Task.
5. Type explorer.exe and hit OK

That should bring your task bar back.

Computer freezes after bios screen on every restart.

One thing you could check is what order your computer is booting from. CD drive hard drive then other. Should be hard drive first. Go into the bios to do that. If you hold the power button down for 5 to 10 seconds the machine should physically shut down rather than unplugg. The unplug thing sounds like its in the power settings. But I've never heard of power settings being connected to bootup except for a password. Anyway a wild guess is check the bios bootup order.

White screen with vertical lines, can't do anything

Can you bootup in Safe Mode?
Press F8 when you bootup.
Then select LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION. then check the Device Manager to see if the Video driver is OK and enabled. If OK then shut down and bootup again to see if it boots up normally.
If this doesn't work select SAFE MODE instead of Last Known ......
When Windows starts then select a Restore Point prior to the installation of the driver update and when it boots up again with luck it will be OK. The graphic card update maybe causing the problem.

Action replay not responding at all

how to reset the Action Replay DS OK we have finally done it!! YEAGH!. Here is the trick for those like my son and I that are trying to get the darn thing to reset. All you have to do is Hold down A&B first while the unit is off. Keep holding A&B buttons then be ready to press the Start & Select button just after you turn on the DS. Wait for the White screen to Appear after bootup, then press and hold the Start & Select buttons while still remaining to hold the A&B Buttons, before the words appear. Another words after health and saftey screen a white screen will appear that is when you add the start & select buttons along with the A&B Buttons. The white screen will stay on for 10 seconds. If it does not stay on the white screen foe about 10 Seconds, it did not work. Otherwise ours did not work until we jumpped the gun on the Liscense screen. Hope this helps someone. :)

Screen Keeps turning off after about 1 second. I turn it on and can see the desktop for about a second then the screen shuts itself off.

Have you tried booting into safe mode? This will also provide a safe video mode. During bootup, press the F8 key. Arrow down to "Safe Mode" and press the enter key. If the monitor still does it after this, chances are it is bad.

Shut Down Problem & Have to Reset Computer Battery

Hi, I had the same problem, for a workaround this is what I did. I made a new shutdown shortcut. Now when I click on it the pc shutsdown fine. I actually put mine on the taskbar. Here's how I did it...

XP Users:
1. Right click the Desktop and select New /Shortcut.
2. A screen will appear asking you for a Command Line. Here's what you put in that box:
For Shutdown:
Shutdown -s -t 0

For Restart:
Shutdown -r -t 0

For Log Off:
Shutdown -l -t 0

After you've decided which of the above options to use, click the Next button and give the shortcut an appropriate name.
Final Notes:
1. Now that you have the nifty little shutdown shortcut on your desktop, you may want to drag it to your taskbar for easier access (and less chance of accidental clickage).
2. I didn't like the nasty looking icon that XP gave my shortcut (it was too Win3.1 for my taste), so I changed it.

If this helps you plz rate this 'fixya'. If not leave a comment & I'll be happy to try to help you further. Thank you kindly.
