Question about Olympus Stylus / mju 1050 SW Digital Camera

1 Answer

Olympus Stylus 1030 SW. Says card cover is open. I have removed the battery and card and opened and closed the USB cover and card cover several times, and powered on and off. Nothing has worked. When I attach it to the computer, nothing happens and I have lots of vacation pics on the camera that I am afraid to lose. Help!

Thanks! I forgot about the card reader. Also, the switch looks to be just fine. It seems to be getting pushed in and out all the way when I shut the door. I think I will try to clean it though and see if that helps. Would alcohol on a q-tip be okay or would you suggest something different?

The cover presses on a switch. So either the switch has a problem or isn't being pressed in enough to activate. This is one of those things that could be a matter of cleaning and it works again or could mean trying to replace the switch which really isn't going to be worth doing. The repair cost will cost more than a new camera. Best advice is to find a camera shop and get a repair tech to look at it. This is one of those things you have to look at to be able to see whats wrong and then know what to fix.

As far as the pictures if they are on the data card don't worry, they are perfectly safe. You just need to get an inexpensive card reader. The camera data card plugs in to them and then they plug into the usb. The computer sees the card as a USB storage device. So you just copy your pictures on to your computer from it. These also are much faster then the camera transfer speed. Cost is $1 and up. sometimes you get the small ones free with a new card.

The problem with digital cameras is that the repair parts and labor are not cheap. So unless it is under warrenty the repair of even small simple things will come close to what you paid for the camera. If you know what the replacement cost is then you can decide if its worth getting it fixed or just to replace it. It's a shame most of the time as the problem is usually on the minor side but the cost isn't.

You can try the swabs but they may not be able to get in all the places. Toothpicks or dental tools if you have them. It might just be a piece of something that needs to be removed so the switch can move enough to operate again.

Iso-propyl rubbing alcohol is pretty safe. If its methyl or ethnol based it can effect some plastics. It's worth checking all of them anyway. Just wet a swab and touch the plastic away from openings etc. Take it off and then touch it to see if it feels soft or sticky. If it doesn't feel that way then its safe to use on that part.

Olympus stylus 1030 SW purchased in 2008 won't download to my Windows 7 computer

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa:

Turns off when cover is closed

First don't spent too much mont for repairs, because cameras are becoming cheaper and cheaper and in the mean while better and better.
You could try to open and close the cover several times and hope it starts working as it should. It has a switch connected to it, so the camera can see if the cover is open or closed. Now it is giving the wrong information. If the camera comes on, when the cover is open, that indicates the battery is still good, unless the it stops working within a short period of time.

remove the batteries and the card from the camera and clean it with something smooth and dry ...after that reinsert the card in th ecamera several times until it is recognised..this happens when the card it is not proper inserted ..or something is meesing with the sensor that detects the cover a gentle cleaning inside will help also..

My Olympus 1030sw is 8 months old and I took it

Well, getting it wet voided your warranty. Remove the battery and card...don't try to turn it on to avoid short circuits. You can try to bury it in some dry, uncooked rice for a couple of days. Water , especially salt water, is disastrous to cameras. The chance of it working are slim and even if it does for awhile, it may stop altogether later. Keep your fingers crossed.

Olympus Stylus 1030 SW display not working after being in water

I just had a similar problem. I am not sure how it was fixed, but it works again - at least for now.

I had the camera on and was taking pictures when the screen went dark. Same as you describe, it takes pictures, flash works, LED, works, everything but the display. I plugged it into my computer with the USB adapter to see if I can salvage what is on the card and the diplay lights up. Tried several variations, but when the cable is connected to the computer (didn't have to be connected to the computer) the screen worked. Unplug, no display. I spun the settings button a couple of times. I accidentally took a couple of short videos and pictures that I deleted. I unplugged the camera and powered down again (tried that before). Power up and the screen is fine.

Again I have no idea what fixed it or why the display worked with the cable plugged in. It might have been related to the videos or some setting that I had slipped into (thought the display button never worked or changed anything).

Hopefully something in there helps or someone can explain what I did.

Olympus Stylus 770SW error message

After only 15 days mine did the same thing. I called the dealer Olympus and they gave me a RAN number and told me where to send it. I got a call about a week later. They said because the camera had moisture inside I was not coverd. The best they would do is mail me a rebate card for 25 dollars off my next purchase. I was like WTF. The woman said sorry but that was all they could do. When I asked to speak to manager she hung up.
