Question about Oreck XL M900A Upright WetDry Vacuum
Make certain the yellow retaining latch is DOWN. Sometimes it LOOKS like it is all the way down when it isn't. Chances are, the tanks outlets were not properly greased, causing an o-ring to stick or roll off the seat.
Simply push down on the tank HARD at the top of the handle. You may have to strike it a few times but it will come off. It is best to do so in the upright position, rather than with the wheels extended. Once it is off, check the o-rings, re-seat if needed and apply some white grease to enhance the seal and prevent future sticking.

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG THEIR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The motor has 5 wires to the motor as stated in the Oreck owners manual, tow are for the headlights, one is a ground wire, and the other two are for the motor. There are two screws that hold in the Oreck motor and a good suggestion is to use tape the wires leads and mark the wires so that you will not make a mistake as you take it apart and reassemble the motor. That way you will not make any mistakes, whether or not you have wires for a headlight or not, the rules are the same. Also refer to the owner’s manual schematic and the exploded view. Testimonial: "Quick answer and the same thing I found out after I posted from an Oreck repair site. Thanks."
Same problem here with XL9100. Bag would not expand implying no suction. Motor ran and brushes turned. Easy disassembly using common tools found that a plastic bag had been sucked up and caused a blockage prior to the impeller. Cleaned up, reassembled, and everything worked fine after that.
