It takes less than 1 litre. You buy it in 1 litre bottles.Go to any boat shop and ask for gearbox oil. There is 2 screws to remove and they have a washer on each.Replace them also. The oil is put into the lower hole untill it starts to come out the top hole. You then quicly put the screws in.The oil container comes with a taped nozzle to do this and its a squeeze bottle..Also a good time to take the prop off and check for fishing line etc. that can damage the seals and to also grease the prop shaft.Hope this helps

How do you service lower unit on a 1989 Johnson outboard motor?

What do you need to do? It is easy to open the two screws to drain lower unit gear lube but drain into a container and not on the ground. I have a pump that I use to replace the lower unit lube. Pump hooks up to quart or larger size lube supply. I have seen U TUBE videos if you need instructions.

After running my johnson 4hp 2s for a couple of hours in the bay it starting giving a strange noise and then cut out.i managed to get it started again but coudnt get above half speed.

Hey Pete.. this sounds serious.... will it rev up while in neutral? If it revs freely and high.. the power head should be ok.. if it will NOT rev up freely and high.. STOP - you are causing more damage..
Check the compression with a good should be 125psi minimum.. with no more than 10 psi difference between any two cylinders.. DO this WITH the THROTTLE WIDE OPEN...
Can you turn the propeller by hand while it is in neutral?..Of not.. this is the problem.

Have just bought a 1993 90hp v4 johnson and would like to know what type of oil to use in the oil resevior

Any tcw3 two stroke oil . I am a marine mechanic and I would recommend disconnecting the vro which is the oil injection. Just disconnect the oil line and then mix the oil in the gas 50 to 1. The vro is known for going out and taking your motor with it

How do I check the oil level in the lower unit of a 70 hp Johnson outboard?

remove the bottom drain screw first then place a tube of the proper lower unit oil in it. then remove the top screw and gently squeeze the tube of oil and when full it will slowly come out the top drain hole. when it does replace the lower plug first then the top plug second. make sure the seals are in good shape and plan on changing the oil in the lower unit yearly for proper maintainence. make sure you buy oil designed for your particular type of motor. good luck.

9.9 johnson want open up

Is it a reconditioned lower unit?

What sort of oil did you put in the lower unit?

Sounds like there is some drag in the lower unit causing the engine to bog down. It will work fine on a stand in neautral however.

How does it go in reverse on the lake? Can you get full throttle?

Lower unit oil change on 1995 40 hp johnson

Howdy, John here, I have a 40hp 1995 Johnson, of the 4 screws, two are screws and two are plugs, the top one is the vent and the bottom one is drain and fill. Oil is forced in from the bottom and out the top to prevent air pockets.
After filling, install the top plug first, then remove the filling device and install the plug.
