I am tryinng to remove the spool head to install a replacement spool on my Grasshog XP 14" string trimmer. I have removed the spool cap and a single screw that holds the spool in place. However, when I twist the spool clockwise to remove, it won't budge. What am I doing wrong? Please help!

These are REVERSE THREAD - this should do it - turn it the other way.

Once the screw is removed the spindle is not threaded so it should come right off. Do they glue these things on??????

Reverse threads are your problem. Reverse the direction - like you were screwing it off - that will work lose - use large pliers.

Elaine, I had to run a rope through the holes that the cap clips into, stood on the rope and then pulled up on the Grass Hog to remove the kit from the spindle. It is just super snug.

Replacing the spool of string for my black and decker 12v electric trimer ? grasshog model

If it is the same as my old 12V version, flip it over and look at the bottom, this is the cap for the string, on the sides there are two push button latches, depress and pull the cap off. Then reach in and remove the old spool. Insert the new spool with the circular sawtooth design to the inside and push the end of the string through the hole in the side. Replace cap ensuring that both latches engage.

My grasshog will not advance the string and it appears that the center post that the string head fits into has worn out but I cannot imagine why. can you replace that part?

Take your string trimmer reel and throw it in the garbage. Go get a gater head and put it on, it will be the best thing you ever did.

I need to put in new string -- don't know how to install. I need to know what to remove -- do I unscrew something, or do I just stick the string inside the casing?

This trimmer is an "AFS" (Automatic Feed System) trimmer meaning the trimmer uses centrifugal force and a lever that play out trimmer line without you ahving to bump it on the ground. Your trimmer uses .080" diamter line. You can get a replacement spool and lever at Lowe's fairly cheap. I would say get the spool that is already wound rather than trying to buy just the line and re-spooling...that will make this a LOT easier!

What you do to replace the line is place the trimmer on a stable flat surface (like a workbench), raise up the head of the trimmer and follow the steps below:

1. Remove the spool cover (this is the orange cap on the head)

2. Remove the spool, (observe and note the orientation of the spool!)

3. Using a pair of pliers, pull the orange feed lever straight out (observe and note the orientation of the lever!)...do not try to pry it off, you will damage the head!

4. Insert the new lever in the same orientation you noted when you removed the old one.

5. Insert the new spool and line in the same orientation as the old spool.

6. Replace the cap.

Black and Decker has an 800 number you can call if you get stuck, the number is 1-800-544-6986. Good Luck!

I need directions to replace string on black and decker cordless 18v grasshog

Go to home depot. look at the floor model and the replacement spools they sell there. Reverse engineer the stringing process or but a pre-loaded spool.
Otherwise,
1. Squeeze the tabs on the side of the head of the unit to remove the spool cover.
2. remove spool.
3. place end of string in small hole in center ring of spool.
4. wide spool with string in the direction of the arrows printed on the spool. DO NOT OVERLOAD!.
5. snap string into notch on spool and cut string leaving 6" exposed.
6. thread 6" of string through hole in side of unit head, replace spool, and replace cover.
7. go cut grass.

How can I remove the old spool kit from a grasshog xp1000? I have a new one to replace it but can't get the old one off.

After removing the screw, I had a heck of a time pulling off the old spool kit. I ended up running a rope through the holes that the cap clips into, stood on the rope and pulled up on the Grass Hog. Finally I managed to pull the old kit off. I managed to put the new one one, but I'm not 100% sure whether the cross-shaped piece at the bottom of the post is perfectly lined up with the new spool head. I was able to replace the screw and so far it seems ok.
