Question about Gateway M350 Notebook

1 Answer

On startup I am told to "check fan" or press F1. One of the two fans will not start on his own. I have to start it with a paperclip.

How do I access the BIOS settings for the P5LP-LE motherboard. The startup key says to press F1, but pressing F1 does nothing.

The instructions say:
"Hold down the F1 key during the startup process and enter BIOS setup to re-enter/reset any custom BIOS settings." I would also try hitting the F1 key multiple times from the very turn on of the computer because the key may have to register at some point after turning on.

Try clearing the CMOS settings as explained on this page, it should clear out any passwords and will set the BIOS settings back to factory settings.

As for "The CPU fan runs normally on boot, but as soon as the Windows flash screen comes up, the CPU fan slows way down."
This is quite normal. On start-up the temperature of the CPU is not being read, when the flash screen comes up just happens to be the same time that the computer recognizes that the CPU is cold and doesn't need to be cooled.

On the "Then the installation program starts running and the CPU Fan speed starts fluctuating wildly from slow to extremely fast."
This could be normal as when files are read from a DVD the CPU doesn't work hard, but when it unpacks the files or does calculations it does work hard. Or it could be that the thermal paste between the CPU and the heat sink is not correct. Either dry , not making contact, or even too much. If the heat is not being transferred that would also explain the shut-down.

The sytem checks for the Chasis fan during the bootup (startup) process. The fan is connected to the motherboard via cable. Turn off the system. Open it and make sure the the cable is connected properly. While the PC is open, press the power button and check if the fan turns on. If not the chasis fan may have gone faulty, which needs replacement. If you find it faulty, you may find and replace the fan by removing the old/ faulty fan by removing the 4 screws and installing the new one.

Hope it helps! Good Luck!

I have problem with my fan when turn on my computer say fan failure press f1 to continued press f2 setup

You should first check to make sure the fan is working. Just open it up and turn it on and see if the fan is functioning properly. If not then you can just order a replacement fan from Dell.

Hi,

First, if the CPU fan is not spinning properly, you should NOT run the system. The fan needs to be replaced.

If the fan is running normally, you may boot by pressing F1.

Before replacing with a new fan, you can first try re-seating the plug for the fan in your computer. The fan's plug may have been bumped or loosed. Re-seat the plug located at J1F1 as shown in the picture below and be sure that it is properly connected.

Hope this helps.

Emachine flashing yellow lights, fans power up when P8 is unplugged

Did some research and found this site which will tell you which pins to test. It is possible also that its not powerful enough for the devices you have. I would try again only giving power to the motherboard pins, of coarse and the hard drive. If works then plug one device at a time.
Good luck
