I tried to connect with the F2 and Fn key but nothing happens. I went into my connections and the only thing that shows up is my LAN connection. I went into the HPQ settings and checked the Enable wireless network box, but still there is nothing. I give up.

I have a HP dv4 1040go Entertainment Laptop, and the touch functions a the top of the keyboard are not working. I downoaded the BIOS and the driver update, and no luck. I do not see any function keys on the keyboard, or any of my wireless keyboards. What funtion key can I use to try to turn the device on? I have plugged in the CAT5 directly to the modem and the internet works. My problem is that the wireless LAN is turned off, and I cannot turn it on in any location I found in control panel, etc. Please help.

Most wireless routers require password to access the router as well to configure router access within your operating system with network solutions.

Just push in on the wifi light Icon on the top of the laptop. It is a light and a switch. The led light will turn orange when it is off and blue when it is on. That's it. Later gater..

While the wireless device should be enabled by default, it's possible that it's disabled.

  1. First check if your wireless device has a hardware enable/disable switch and enable it.
  2. Next, check the wireless software that your computer uses and make sure it isn't disabling the device. Intel Proset is known for doing this.
  3. Now check for any wireless function keys. Function keys are normally blue icons on your F-keys. It will have some sort of wireless icon. You'll need to hold down the Fn key and tap that function key.
  4. Lastly, check your Network Connections from Control Panel. It should show your wireless device in there, and if it's disabled (greyed out) you can right click on it and select Enable.
If you aren't sure what to do or want a more definitive answer please post your laptop's model. Then I can figure out what's most likely the problem.

Wireless Connection with a Laptop

Hi, I presume you have internet installed already.
Is it dsl connection you have or via a digital set top tv box, such as SKY or Virgin , I don't know which country you are in, but you will have to find a provider first.

All you need is wireless router and the first connections are :-
1/ Phone line to modem
2/ Modem to router
3/ Router to laptop ( This is a physical, temporary connection, while the wireless part is setup.
4/ Which ever router you buy, follow the instructions carefully

If you need more help, please ask.

Regards - Anthony

My compaq presario V2000 will only connect to dialup

To connect to your DSL internet you will need an ethernet port or wireless card on your laptop. Your laptop should have an ethernet port, it will look like a phone jack but a little bigger. In the off chance that you don't have an ethernet port on your laptop you can also purchase an ethernet to usb adpater. You may have a wireless card installed on your laptop, but if not you can purchase a usb wireless adapter. To use your internet wirelessly in your home you'll also need a wireless router. All of these things can be purchased at your local electronics store (walmart, best buy, kmart, frys) and usually are fairly easy to setup with the included instructions.

Need help with Wifi Connection with COMPAQ EVO N610C LAPTOP

First you will need a router which will enable you to create a wireless network for your internet connection. I recommend, if you're purchasing online, to use Tigerdirect. Then you would need a USB wireless adapter for your laptop which will enable it to communicate with the wireless router and establish an internet connection.
Below are some links for the most affordable and best rated products you need.

How to make the toshiba satellite a15-129 pc notebook wireless?

The first thing that you need tohave in order to get wireless internet is a wireless networking adapter. If you own a newer laptop, this is probably inside your computer as we speak.
If you don't own a wireless carddon't panic.
You can easily purchase oneseparately. They are relatively inexpensive. The best place to purchase a wirelesscard is eBay (opens new window).
There are two important thing thingsto look for in your wireless card.
1.Make sure it is a 802.11g card. They have 802.11b, 802.11a, and several others.Having an 802.11g will enable you to connect at much faster speeds and fromfarther away.
2.Purchase a wireless card that connects in the PCMCIA slot.
The next thing you are going to wantto get is high speed internet. It is possible to have wireless internet withdial-up, but it will be so slow it simply isn't worth it.
In order to have high speedinternet, you are going to need a cableor dsl modem depending on what internet you have. This type of modemwill not be found in your laptop.
There are many different types andbrands of modems out there. I have had no problems or complaints with the Motorola Surfboard. It's easyto set up and has lasted a long time now.
Other well known modems are Linksys and Netgear.
You can get cable/dsl modems muchcheaper on eBay. But make sure that all of the equipment comes in the box.Either order one that says new or contact the seller and ask them if all of thewires and cables are included.
The next thing on how to set upwireless internet is getting a wirelessrouter (opens new window).
This is the piece of equipment thatmakes things wireless. You can have high speed internet without a router. Butto be able to connect multiple computers and have your laptop have a wirelessconnection you are going to have to purchase a router.

Fortunately, routers are gettingcheaper and cheaper by the day now.
You can certainly find a nice wireless router on eBay forunder $30.
Similar to the wireless card, makesure you get a router that is 802.11g. This will allow you to connect fasterand from farther away.
Also, try to look for a routerthat has a connection of at least 54 Mbps. Ifseveral people will be using the internet at one time you may consider gettinga router even faster then that.
Once you have all of the necessaryequipment, it's time to hook everything up.
It's hard to explain precisely howto do this because each modem and router may need to be hooked up differently.
But the main steps on how to set upwireless internet are this...
1.Hook up wherever your internet is coming from to your modem. Your internetsource will vary depending on whether you have Cable or DSL.
2.Connect your modem to your router. This is the essential part of makingwireless possible.
3. Turn on whatever computer you havethat has a wireless card and enjoy your wireless internet experience!

Hi I,m thinking about buying an Acer Aspire just to surf the net etc, nothing fancy and have never hooked up laptop access at home...what do I need?? Im a woman who deals with computer problems all day at...

It all depends what you want for internet, wired, or wireless. I would say in your case, you would be better off with wireless internet. Also, i would recommend that you explore your options before purchasing a laptop, acer laptops are not very good in my opinion, they don't last long, and they are usually outdated by at least 6 months. You may want to check out tigerdirect.com, newegg.com, or frys.com, those are all great sites for purchasing computers, and computer accessories. But on to the original question, i'm going to assume you want wireless internet. You will have to make sure the laptop you purchase has wifi/wireless built in. The website you are purchasing the laptop from, or the representative in the store you're purchasing it from should be able to tell you whether or not it has wifi. Next you will need a wireless router, you want a router with wireless g functionality, they cost from $30 - $75 and will serve your purposes perfectly. The router should come with setup instructions, usually they're pretty user friendly. That is all you need for a wireless home network, unless you have desktop computers that you would like to have wireless, then you would have to get a wireless card for each one.

I have a broadband internet connection at home which had a modem and only one LAN cable. Now I have 2 laptop's one with Microsoft XP and other MS-Vista. Whenever I try to connect internet the one with XP...

if you had say one desktop and one laptop I would say to buy another LAN card for the desktop and enable internet connection sharing on it for the other computer but with two laptops that might not be possible and you will need a router.
But routers are pretty cheap nowadays and you can probably find a basic 4 port router on eBay for around $20 (you don’t really need to spend the extra money on a wireless one unless of course both laptops have wireless connections then you might find that a wireless router to be pretty useful.)
But to answer your question YES you need a router since a router will take your IP address and split it up into multiple internal IP addresses and allow more that one connection to the internet that will appear as one connection to your ISP

If all you're looking for is wireless internet within your home, then you can simply buy a wireless router off the shelf from Best Buy. However, a wireless router will only provide a range of a couple hundred feet, perhaps a couple of hundred yards. Essentially, it only provides internet access at a single fixed location. I'm getting the impression you're looking for something more.

If you're looking to have internet access wherever you go, no matter how far from home, you're going to need a subscription to wireless internet from a cellular provider such as AT&T or Sprint. They sell both internet access as well as the cards used to connect to the network, so check out their websites to explore your options.

WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS

Hi,

I would suggest that you get a Wireless Router something like a LinkSys WRT54G. There other brands and models available. With such a WiFi router, you can still connect your old PC using the LAN/Ethernet and connect your new laptop without any wires. Most (but not all) would require that you run first the CD before installing the router.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
