Question about Olympus FL-36 TTL Flash

1 Answer

Non-syncing Olympus FL-36

Ihave 2 Olympus E1's and 2 FL-36 flas guns. When recently using both cameras at a wedding I became aware thate the flash on one of the camera's was not syncing with the shutter. I switched the guns over and established the the fault was in the gun NOT the camera. The faulty gun fails to sync on an E500 as well. I have discovered that it will sync if the gun is set to MANUAL or AUTO mode but not if set to TTL Auto or FP TTL Auto modes. Furthermore, if the camera is set to a long manual shutter speed the flash still does not register any exposure. From this I have concluded that the gun must be firing BEFORE the shutter is open. As I assume that the sync contact is controled by the shutter travel and that three cameras that work perfectly with my other FL-36 are obviously not to blame, I am intrigued as to how the gun can fire prematurely.
Any help with this would be very appreciated, Thanks in anticipation, Ray.

Hey I have an E510 and an fl 36 flash unit and no problems for a year now.
And no problems at all {knock wood]!
Have you checked to see if all the flash pins are making contact?
Normally I only turn my flash on after I put it on the camera and then turn the camera off and then on again to see if everything is ok. I remember the flash would not communicate with the camera on a shoot and after a while I realized that the flash was not all the way in the hot shoe. Fool around with the flash off the camera first and see the flash have modes that you have to set up if the mode is set in full manual that might be a problem. There is a button that you have to hold down for three seconds to get in the menu. My buttons are fine and have not faded any at all. I realize that the power button an the flash is hard to press on, I do hope I was of help .GOOD LUCK

FL-50 Repair

Here is the part that you need.
http://www.uscamera.com/cgi-bin/cart.pl

It will take some fiddling around with very small parts to get that installed.
Or you can send it in to Olympus- I know a couple of people that have been charged ~$50 for the repair and Olympus also reconditions everything as well.
Cheers.

5-pin TTL connector for external flash

The 5-pin TTL connector is designed to control the Olympus FL-40 dedicated flash unit (p/n 200596). To use the FL-40 with these cameras, the optional Olympus FL-CB01 cable (p/n 200 664) and FL-BK01 flash bracket (p/n 200 666) must be used. The 5-pin TTL connector can also control a PC Sync flash or strobe system by using the optional FL-CB04 flash cable (p/n 200 661). Since this type of flash/strobe is non-dedicated, the photographer will need to manually match the flash output with the camera.
