Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

Hi, I have a Kenmore Coldspotside by side model 51572200. The water dispenser stopped working. Ice maker works fine. I don't hear any sound when pressing the water dispenser. I've replaced the filter with no luck. I've turned the coldness down to factory recommendations (a week ago), no luck. I disconnected the hose at the bottom of the fridge and when I try to dispense, no water comes out there either. Can you help? Thanks, Melanie

I've determined that it is definitely not a matter of frozen lines. Also, water is not coming out at the bottom when I disconnect the tubing and try to dispense. I'm not an electrician so I need some more instruction on how to check the voltage going to the solenoid or any other testing to determine if it is the switch.

Hi,
This problem is caused due to these reasons.

1)Bad water inlet valve, make sure the water reservoir in the refrigerator is not frozen and check if 120 VAC is coming to the water valve solenoid while the water dispenser calls for water.

2)You have two separate solenoid valves. One feeds the ice maker the other one feeds your water dispenser. You can shut the water off, take the hose off and clean the strainer. or you can check for voltage going into the solenoid, press for water and check power going into the solenoid that is feeding your water dispenser.

3)Your water line could be frozen in the door. You can disconnect the line under the unit before it goes into the door at the bottom hinge. Push the dispenser button and see if it comes out there. If it does try a hair dryer blowing where the water line is at the dispenser for a few minutes.Water pipe in the freezer door was frozen then this will cause this issue.

4)If the refrigerator water filter, remove it.Make sure the sediment filter is not blocked.

5)Clean saddle valve, shut off valve if it is frozen melt the blocks of ice.

6)See if water is getting to the door. You have to track the water line and disconnect it from the bottom of the door. Then water that might come and hit the paddle to call for water. If you do get water then you have an issue with the tubing in the door. If still no water trace your lines back into the fridge compartment and make sure it is not kinked or even frozen.

7)Switch off your refrigerator for 8 hours or more and let the fridge get warm and melt all the frozen ice. Then switch it on and check.

8) If still the problem persist dispenser switch is defective

solenoid is located on the bottom or side of the refrigerator.
This is an electrically operated magnetic valve. It consists of a coil wound around a sleeve of non-magnetic substance. When energized, the coil carries an electrical current and becomes a magnet.Inside the sleeve is a movable iron core, which will be attracted by the magnetic field of force to remain suspended in a midway position inside the sleeve. The iron core movement opens the valve. When the coil is de-energized, the iron core returns to its normal position to close the valve.

Check the solenoid valve with multi tester.

To measure the voltage, place the tester on the coil to ensure you are getting power from the solenoid. If not, you will need to replace the solenoid.

Check directly at the coil as well as the connections between the terminals and the appliance.See any change in reading you are able to get it.

Touch one probe to each terminal. The meter generally reads around 80 to 200 ohms. If it is less than 20 ohms, the coil is most likely has a short . If it is above 500 ohms, it is open, and needs to be replaced.

We stopped getting water from our Kenmore freezer door dispenser. I have verified the solenoid valve is working. The line from the solenoid outlet to the dispenser appears to be plugged (can't blow...

Many times the lines get frozen as they run through the back of the refrigerator section. Sometimes simply turning the temp up in that section will open the lines. Additonally, you might have to remove everything from the unit and totally defrost it to clear it. IF it's Ice.
Do you use a filter for the water comming into the unit? IF not you could have a blockage. If that is the case you will have to find where the block is and remove the block.

Hi, I have a amana fridge with freezer on the bottom. It has an ice maker and water dispenser. The big problem is a buzzing noise comming from the fridge, it start aprox every 16 min and buzzes for 10...

The buzzing you hear is the water valve trying to run water to the icemaker. If there is no water going to the icemaker it will be going into cycles one after another. And when it does it adds heat into the freezer. Turn the ice maker off and see if the freezer gets colder.

Hi, if the fan, evaporator fan is not running, it has failed on you. If you are up to doing this kind of work, you can replace it your self. It is a 120 volt evaporator fan motor, and if you can get it out, take it with you along with the name of the unit, model & serial # to an appliance parts house to get one. If they don't have the exact one, they have universal ones that will fit. This will solve your problem.

SMEG FA550X fridge freezer. The ice maker has stopped working, freezer has thick ice built up at bottom, fridge does not appear to be keeping food cold enough as milk etc is going off quickly. Two to...

Your Ice maker may be the cause. if it is not holding water the water may be landing on the bottom and freezing, causing the ice build up and obstructing the air transfer from the freezer to the refrigerator. You can remove or replace your Ice maker. Then you will have to defrost your freezer to get everything back to normal.

Have Kenmore sid-by-side refrigerator: 7909621940B - Just changed water filter. Now, no water or ice dispenses. Ice maker is making ice - filled the bin over a few days. But, when I push to dispense...

We also have a kenmore side by side refrig and had the same problem,,,
FIRST, CHECK THE CONNECTION BETWEEN NEW FILTER AND ATTACHMENT POINT,,
IF THE RUBBER GASKET CAME LOSE DURING THE CHANGE, IT MAY BLOCK THE PATHWAY FOR WATER TO FLOW
NEXT, CHECK THE WATER/ICECUBES/CRUSH LEVER SWITCH TO MAKE SURE IT IS NOT PART WAY BETWEEN ONE OF THE SETTINGS,
NEXT,CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR UNIT HAS A RESET BUTTON,
THE RESET BUTTON IS USUALLY IMMEDIATELY INSIDE THE OPENING WHERE THE WATER/ICE DISPENSES AND UP, YOU WOULD NEED TO PLACE YOUR FINGER RIGHT DIRECTLY UP BEHIND THE FRONT PLASTIC COVER, AND IT'S GOING TO BE A VERY SMALL BUTTON, I AM NOT SURE WHICH SIDE ON YOUR UNIT R OR L, BUT DIRECTLY UP IN THE CORNER,,
I HOPE ONE OF THESE HELPS !! angi

Not making ice. water is getting to the water dispenser but don't know why it is not getting to the ice maker itself. how do i check it/repair it.

Hia and wl;ecome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
We really need a make and model number to provide you with specific unit applicable information but.... in general, here goes:
1. Ice makers must have a freezer temp below 16 Deg F. If there is an airflow problem in the freezer caused by a fan or ice build up the ice maker will no longer make ice.
2. The ice maker has a thermostat that controls the harvest and fill cycle. If the thermostat fails it will stop making ice.
3. There is a water valve in the back of the unit that has TWO electric solenoids on it. One for water in door and one for ice. If a solenoid fails it will stop providing water to the applicable function. I.e water in door or ice. You can briefly remove the fiberboard back cover to gain access to the water valve. Then switch the installed terminal connection between solenoids. Left to right or front to back depending on how it is mounted. Then try the water in door. If water flows to the ice maker when water in door switch is actuated then the solenoid for making ice is good and the probem is with the icemaker. (Reconect wires in original positions.)

Note that anytime you remove power from the unit you must wait 10 - 15 mintues before re-applying power so the coolant system can stabilze. Other wise the compressor will not start.

Here is a web link that will help most people troubleshoot ice maker problems:
http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=12&newsdesk_id=34

The link above is pretty good.
There is a 48 page job aid also for whirlpool in door ice that is also a big help:

This should help you find out why it is not making ice.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Here we go, I have a GE side by side about 6 years old... Started with the icemaker not dispensing ice consistently... then the ice stopped all together (even though the bin was full and not froze solid)....

The clicking you are hearing is the relay unit. Now it is for sure that the compressor is not working as the relay keep s tripping off.
So first of all to clear this doubt, let us checck the relay unit which is clicking. remove and check. most of the time the relays need to be replaced as a poor contact will not deliver good voltage to the compressor and it will shut off. So check this out.
One the compressor works and you notice there is cooling the sytem seems ok except that you must check if the thermostat, the auto defrost cut off timer works.
If after the compressor works the cooling is not good then you can decide on a replacement than to spend for expensive repairs

Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.

The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice maker needs water. If the valve doesn't seal good because of sediment or wear it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube it will freeze. You can take the water line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.
