RAM upgrade gone wrong?

My father owns a 7 year old Compaq Presario 5000 5410us. It was running a little slow given it's age so I suggested a memory upgrade. That being one of the few technical things I know how to do with computers. The computer was already 256 mbs with one open slot it uses SDR. (I looked all this up online before hand) So we went out to get another 256 stick. I asked one of the Geek Squad guys at BestBuy just to double check if I was getting the right kind of memory. Which he said it was. I got back, installed the stick in the memory slot. and replugged everything in but now there is a major problem. When the pc is turned on it will get as far a the windows welcome screen and then quickly rstart itself. the only interaction I can get is going into the F10 setup screen before windows boots. It says the computer now has 512 mbs of RAM but that's not doing me much good without being able to boot windows.

Try booting up the computer without the memory see if it will have the same problem. If it does, then the new memory messed it up. If it works ok then the gooks gave you the wrong type.
if you go into the BIOS you can see if it is the right one.
it should be PC133.

Did you already try using last know good configuration?
When your computer boots instead of f10 press F8. Then select last known good configuration and enter.

if it didn't work try booting up the computer without the memory see if it will have the same problem.

Compaq presario s5100nx very slow windows xp

1GB of RAM is not enough to run Windows XP and the programs you installed efficiently. Removing unnecessary programs should make more memory available for necessary programs but it will never be fast. is a great resource for memory upgrades but I don't think you should invest in a computer that old with a completely unsecure and unsupported operating system (XP).

I hope this helps.

I put new pc 133 ram into my compaq 5868 computer. It had 512 meg and I upgraded to 1 gig. But when I installed the new ram, The computer locks up. It starts the Memory test on start up, but locks up...

Sorry but I think that may be a bit much memory for that motherboard as described at the following links:

But I may have looked up the wrong PC, so the easiest way is put the old ram back in, get it running, then go to WWW.CRUCIAL.COM and run their SCAN MY COMPUTER option.

It will tell you exactly how much RAM you have currently, what type it is, and exactly how much more you can put into it. It's free and real handy and quick.

Good luck and please post back if this helps at all.

Will Windows XP work on a Compaq 5020?

Yes, but it will be somewhat slow on such a old computer. I would recommend getting a new computer or buying a newer used computer, for example from ebay.

Compaq presario 2200 is very slow

If you open up Windows Explorer, right-click on 'My Computer' if you are running XP or 'Computer' if you are running Vista and select Properties from the context menu, you will be presented with a window that displays information about the installed processor and clock speed as well as the amount of memory installed in the computer.

Again in Windows Explorer, if you right-click on Local Disk (C:) and select Properties, you will be presented with a window that give you information about the amount of used space, free space and total space on the hard disk.

Compaq Presario S4300CL PC Desktop is SLOW.

You said you have 512K of RAM; I assume you mean 512MB. Either way, you are in dire need of a RAM upgrade. The sweet spot for XP memory-wise was 2gigs. The working minimum is 512MB, but the recommended spec is at least 1. If you upgraded to at least 2 gigs of ram, you'll see a speed improvement.
If you need help finding out what type of memory to get, let me know.

I have a compaq presario running windows xp with an ethernet connected to a neiopia modem or router. My conection speed is fast but computer is very very slow. All scans are good, what are correct settings...

Hi reston,

It sounds like you may benefit from a memory upgrade, RAM is running pretty cheap nowadays. If your windows programs are running good, but, it drags on the Internet try deleting all the junk in your temporary internet files(offline files also), browsing history and cookies. If this doesn't speed things up its quite possible you may have picked up a bug somewhere and its slowing your system down. I know you said all scans are clean, however, some spyware and malware embed themselves into the cpu's BIOS, Registry and even the root of the windows OS. Let's hope its none of these. A lot of antivirus software claim to clean all areas, alas, the don't reach everything. Try some of these suggestions and see if anything works for you. I hope this helps a little.

Thanks for using

Sincerely, cyyyd7

How to upgrade a new compaq presario SR2150NX?

Add more RAM, 512MB ram will slow your computer down because when you run out of ram the computer uses the hard drive as vitrual ram. I have 4GB in my Vista machine and it is faster than XP.

Another suggestion is to turn off the hard drives indexing. Right click on your "C" drive and unhook the "index this drive for faster searching" box.
