If the monitor goes black randomly there are two possible reason for that, first the problem is with your video card , for video card problem what we can do first is to open device manager and uninstall and then restart the computer to reinstall the driver for it to do that follow these.
If you're using XP right click Mycomputer > Properties Hardware tab Device manager then look for display adapter click the plus sign then right click your video card and click uninstall after that restart the computer and check if the problem is fix.
But if still same problem the issue here is now with your monitor itself the best way to check that is to try a different monitor and if a second monitor work fine the monitor needs repair or better yet replace it.
