My LG RC199H DVD/VCR combo unit has been problematic since July 2006 when I made the mistake of purchasing it. DVDs "freeze up" when watching them, whether they are new or used, yet play flawlessly when inserted into my other DVD players and gaming console. When this occurs (every time I watch a DVD), it does not respond to any commands I input via the unit itself or via remote control. My only option is to unplug the unit from the wall, plug it back and and keep hitting the eject button to retrieve the DVD, before it freezes back up.
When I call LG, all they can suggest is that I buy a DVD cleaning kit and use that...or pay them $69. to access it. In hindsight, I should have never bought this piece of LG junk, but since I regrettably did, I should have promptly returned it upon purchasing, but now cannot since the manufacture's warranty has run out...which brings me here...after calling Best Buy's Customer Support line who reference this FixYa site for possible Tech based solutions, before throwing this LG garbage in the trash where it belongs by default.
-   Hi scollora, I want to know if you can tell us what kind of drive did you put on the Recorder, I think that is a LG DVD Writter, but what model did you used?
I connected the original drive in my PC, and I found that the drive only reads CDs and not DVD as must be.
I will try with my PC's LG DVD-ROM, if that could read DVD movies, it will be great!
-   DVD Freezes Call Factory and was told that they were working on the problem . It's caused by the copy protection on the DVDs . All I no is keep call and hopefully they will come up with a fix. -   smreq

-   The LG RC-199H unfortunately is a lemon model. I too regret purchasing this item, and found that the LG service support was downright evasive in helping resolve the problem. I was able to have a local LG service repair place fix it by "replacing the drive". I was partially under warranty, so the parts were covered, but the labor was not. It ended up costing me about $60. Since repaired, I have used the recorder two times, aforums.nd played a dvd maybe 20 times. It has been a year since repaired, and is now acting up again, freezing... or not recognizing discs. LG should really be held accountable for issuing such a problematic unit. I see that the problem is well discussed on many forums, and clearly, there is a design flaw.

-   Purchased one LG RC199H & exchanged it the the next day because of constant crashing behavior. The 2nd LG RC199H after a year crashes all the time and is totally unusable.

On a hunch, I cracked open my unit and saw that the drive was just a standard IDE DVD writer. I took mine out of my computer and tried it out. So far, it's played many discs the other drive would not play at all. It's a weird fit, but I can just keep it in there with double-face tape. At least the unit is usable now. I think these units just went out with bad drives. I don't think it's the processor because ever since replacing my drive it's been working.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it seems that your particular unit has a problem within the processing section not the optics. Bad or dirty optics could cause the video to freeze up, but not the entire unit. Don't waste your time on this one. The replacement parts cost will exceed a replacement unit. your problem is not unusual. I have seen it before. Usually it shows up during the warranty period so that it is repaired at no cost to the consumer. Once resolved, I have not seen the problem occur again.

My dvd player will not reset, per manufacturers instructions. I cannot use any of the front button displays or the remote control. I have to hold down the power switch the turn it off. Makes a weird running sound as soon as I plug it in, but nothing happens. I opened the unit to peek inside, and nothing looks out of place.

I have comcast digital cable. When I use the auto mode for channels on my recorder it does install some channels. A message comes up that this channel has switched to digital. Is there some kind of adapter that I Thankscan use on my recorder so I can record these channels.
