Make sure you are outdoors or in your vehicle with an unobstructed clear view to the sky. Also make sure you are running the current version of the gps you are trying to use. You can also go under settings and turn off gps and wait a minute or two and turn it back on to "reset" the gps.

Will not fire up a gps signal

Most GPS systems require a first time boot-up where they scan all registered satellites to determine where in the world they are and what satellites to concentrate their navigational efforts on. Try charging the GPS up entirely, and then doing a hard reset of the system (either by navigating to the hard reset in software or by pressing the tiny reset button usually located on GPS units), and then taking the system out under the open sky and letting it run for half an hour or so, making sure it is running in navigation mode (as opposed to setup or media mode). Once it locks properly onto a small subset of satellites, it should not have much difficulty.
If you continue having problems, check to be certain you are running the latest software on the device which can make a big difference. The latest software for the 520 is here:

Good luck...

Will not find city or locations

Hello.

Solution to the problem.

With the right piece of hardware and software, it ispossible to triangulate your location anywhere on earth using satellitenavigation. These gamin devices cansuccessfully guide you from one place to another, or they can simply use theconnection with the satellite to tell you your exact current location. Thelatter function requires you to know how to locate the GPS device using theoptions onscreen.
1 Purchase a GlobalPositioning System (satellite navigation) product. There are manymanufacturers, including TomTom, NavMan and Garmin.2 Turn on the GPS and leave itfor a minute or so as it establishes a connection between the device and thesatellite.
3 Navigate to the"Current Location" option in the "Tools" or"Settings" menu (the exact pathway to this option depends on whichGPS device you have). The satellite signal will now successfully locate yourGPS device.4 Type a ZIP code or placename once you have located your GPS device. The gamin can now successfully guide you to your finaldestinationThanks.

Unable to acquire satellites

GPS devices do not work inside buildings or in tunnels. Even outside, high-rise buildings or trees can interfere with GPS signal reception. Car navigation systems do not work through the roof of the car, they need to be mounted to the windshield of the car with free view to the sky, or use an external antenna.
Some cars have metal coating on the windows for sunlight blocking or privacy protection. Such coatings may also block the GPS satellite signals.

Another problem: unlike TV satellites, GPS satellites do not have a fixed position relative to the ground, they move all the time. Your GPS device needs to locate and tune in on four satellites minimum first to start working for you. The scanning of the hemisphere to locate satellites takes several minutes (up to ten on Tomtom devices).

Tomtom devices use a device stored file with precomputed satellite positions to speed up the process to a few seconds. Since the file holds data only for about two weeks, the package "QuickGPSFix" needs to be updated at least once in a fortnight using the Tomtom HOME software, or it will fall back to the slow scanning procedure.

If you do have a different brand of GPS device, please add a comment to this post and I'll try to give further advice.

Takes 30 minutes to locate satellites to begin navigation

Hello sassysdad,

In order to achieve a location lock your GPS receiver must receive complete reports from at least four Global Positioning Satellites. If you are standing still in an area with a relatively clear view of the sky, this should happen fairly quicky. However, if you are operating your GPS indoors, in a vehicle, or in an area with obstructions that block the line of sight between the receiver and the sky or if you are moving, it makes it more likely that the receiver will be unable to receive these signals or that part of the signals may be garbled or missed. In these cases it can take some time for the GPS receiver to aquire all the satellite data it needs.

Newer GPS receivers are much less susceptible to this issue, but it can still occur depending on how and where you are operating.

Best regards,
Ken

Cannot locate satellites

have had this some times, if it takes too long >1min ik take out the battery, this resets it somehow and speeds the fix up. also in release 3.40 it seems te happen less. Also watch out for windscreens with anti frost grids mounted in the glass, mine has this and it dims the signal a little so it will take longer to fix, try another car to see if this goes faster. hope this helps, Peter
