Try using a DISC cleaner because sometimes the cd drive is dirty that's why you have that problem.

I have Samsung R590 Laptop which i bought December last year... Before the USB ports used to work properly and display wt ever data is present in the usb ... but now it reads the data but all appear as...

Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article 971029
describes an update to Autorun that restricts AutoPlay
functionality to CD and DVD media. This update is intended to stop AutoPlay
functionality from working on USB drives, external hard drives, or network
shares. This update is available for supported editions of Windows XP, Windows
Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008.

Removable USB/thumb drives use the Autorun feature to load files when the drives are plugged into the USB port. Malware exploits the Autorun feature to spread from thumb drive to PC. Disable the autorun feature to prevent malware from spreading.

The preceding describes what has likely happened to your USB ports due to Windows update disabling the autorun feature for USB thumbdrives. The thumbdrive may no longer present its data properly unless you manually invoke the autorun in its root.

DVD Writer Model SH-S223 dont read

Hi firma,

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but check ou tthis link to the SH -S223F firmware:

http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWARE/Samsung/Samsung-SH-S223F-DVD-Writer-Firmware-SB03.shtml

I also found this:
This optical drive is a Plug 'n Play device in Windows OS's. The only requirement is connection to a WORKING SATA controller. Check in Device Manager to insure the sata controller is working/enabled and you shouldn't have any problem. Windows will auto-detect / auto-install the drive without user intervention once this condition has been met.

Additionally, you will need 3rd. party recording and dvd decoding software in order to use all the functions this drive was built to perform, ie: play dvd movie disks and record to dvd and cd-rw disks. Windows is sorta limited on what all it will support.... that's the reason for the additional 3rd. party software like Nero or Roxio and PowerDVD or WinDVD.

Here is a link to InfraRecorder:

WinDVD:
http://windvd.en.softonic.com/

PowerDVD:
http://powerdvd.en.softonic.com/

Nero:

Hope this helps, let me know how you made out in a comment, if you need more help, feel free to ask in the comment.

Philips driver reads dvd and cd discs but won't write to dvd disc. Philips driver model no DVDR1628K/00. 1,7ghz Celeron, 768 Mb ram. Nero software. Was writing for years. I tried Infraexpress.

Hi rossw8:

You can find the most current drivers for your DVDR here:

http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?tmplt=ePlatform%20-%20Philips&scy=CH&slg=ENG&sct=INTERNAL_OPTIC_DRIVES_SU&cat=DRIVERS_AND_STORAGE_CA&session=20101224171044_205.193.94.40&grp=PC_AND_PHONES_GR&ctn=DVDR1628K/00&mid=Link_Software&hlt=Link_Software

If you are rubbing Windows Vista or Windows 7 you shlopw be aware that the supplied software ("Nero Essentials") is not compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Windows Vista already includes its own standard built in functionality to burn your CD. You do not need additional software to burn CD's. For burning DVD the Internet currently offers alternative software which is free and offers similar functionality (like Nero 9 Lite).

Windows 7 already includes its own standard built in functionality to burn your CD/ DVD. You do not need additional software for that. However, the Internet currently offers alternative software which is free and offers similar functionality (like Nero 9 Lite).

Trust this is helpful. Please vote.

Product is Roxio Easy CD & DVD Burning. We put the cd in the drive, we get lights on the drive, we get hard drive disk activity but no installation program comes up. We tried turning off Norton AV,...

Most probably the CD does not have the autoun function or the autorun is no functioning. If you need to install the software, open the Windows Explorer and click on the drive for the CD and on the Explorer right side plane double click the "setup" installer and the installation should run.

Hope it helps.

Just purchased, and trying to install HP dvd1170e DVD-RAM Burner. It is recognized, but cumputer running Windows XP does not fine driver, and dvd1170e is not functional. How do I solve this?

These devices require software to burn DVD's and CD's that is NOT just a driver...

A driver is not enough... typical software is NERO and other such as CD Creator, etc..

A DVD is quite different than talking to a USB memory stick or even a hard drive and you can;t just copy a file to it like you can a hard drive.

Typically using programs such as NERO, you copy to a list within NERO and when you tell it to burn the disc, it gathers all the pieces you have selected and goes about the operation...

The cd is detected but the dvd can not even when i tried checking on its dvd properties, there's no sign of a blank cd available. what should i do with this?

If you are trying to use built in Windows XP burning software, this will not work with DVDs. You need some third party burning software, eg Nero to get that functionality.

Drive not responding

Windows uses autorun or autoplay to detect removable discs such as cds and dvds.

Some cd and dvdroms, especially software installers, have an autorun.inf file which forces the disc to start.

Firstly Autoplay. Your media player may have been set to disable this function so your discs do not automatically run. Or you may have several suitable media players installed, but you haven't set one as your default player. Make sure you choose a default player, then set it to automatically run when a disc is inserted.

Secondly, you should be able to manually run the disc by going to My Computer then left click the dvd or cd drive. You may be prompted to select a player or program to run the disc.

Thirdly, "autorun" may have been disabled in registry.
You can check this by looking at the following key in registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoDriveAutoRun
This will be followed by Bit 0 for drive A and Bit 1 for drive B etc. IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS, DO NOT TOUCH REGISTRY!!!

Fourthly, as kykeaton says, you may have a faulty drive.

autorun may have been deliberately disabled in registry.

Light Scribe is not detected

I Have had this problem as well.  First, go to nero's website, and download the latest version for your edition I know that if you use Nero 7 if wont work without the update.  Also, check and make sure that you have the latest drivers and firmware for the drive, as this can also cause it to not be detected.  Also, try a different Litescribe program, and see if it works that way.
