My craftsman garage door opener seems to be running in the open only mode. I removed the chain and then it will run for a normal amount of time, but each time in the open direction?

Thanks. I opened it up and saw that the drive gear was cracked and wasn't turning the gear that moves the contact switch to the stop limits. Have a nice weekend and thanks for responding

Since the motor works in 1 direction anyhow, that is good. The only 2 other possibilities would be whatever tells the motor to run in close mode,i.e. a relay or sensor(probably a relay),or the switch itself.I would imagine the switch you push would be up for up,down for down?Or is it a remote control or keypad?Anyhow,to check it out you would probably need a meter or at least a test light.Let me know how it is controlled and if you have anything. If not, there is a way to check the switch without any meter or light but you have to be able to take a jolt and get thrown across the room.(Just kidding, that will NOT happen).Just trying to provide some relief as you may be getting frustrated because I have seen your problem posted here and there and it seems noone can or at least is willing to at least try.Greg

All garage door openers have a quick release. Have you checked to make sure that is locked in place? Most have a cord hangin from it and you pull it which releases it from the chain. Make sure that is engaged and it should work.

Have a Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door Opener, been working fine. Now when you start it you hear the motor running as normal but the chain doesnt move?

You must ensure the drive chain is engaged to the door puller.
Sometimes the emergency release if pulled (red cord) the drive and the coupling come separated.
Make sure the pin is back in place (pull release cord and make sure pin springs back in).
The run an open close cycle, it should pick up the drive again.

I have a Craftsman garage door opener, model# 13953674srt1. It will not open or close the door. The motor sounds normal & runs the entire cycle but the chain is not moving. What is the problem?

Remove the cover from the motor unit and you will find the drive gear is stripped. The part number is 41A2817 and is available at any good door service company.

It sounds like your door sensors may be misaligned. If when you try to close the door the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position this is the case. Make sure the small light on each sensor is lit and not flickering. Tweak the sensors to see if you can get both lights to come on. If not you have a bad sensor.

Garage door doesn't open and close properly

Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor unit. With the door closed run the motor until the sprocket turns clockwise and stops. With everything attached replace and tighten the chain. Some adjusting of the up and down limits will probably be required.

I have a Sears Craftsman 1/2 horse garage door opener. When I push the button, I can hear it hum, but the chain won't move and it seems the sprocket is frozen?

If your door is stuck in the open position you will find the trolley is jammed against a bolt just in front of the motor unit. Remove that bolt and run the opener until the door closes. Now locate the 'up limit' control on the side of the motor unit and turn it 2 times in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Replace the bolt.

Craftsman garage door opener 1/2 hp will not open door

It sounds like your chain is out of sync with the limit switches. Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket on top of the motor unit. Now run the opener until the sprocket runs counterclockwise and stops. Now with everything attached and the door in the open position replace and tighten the chain. You are now in sync. You may need to tweak the up and down limit controls which are on the side of the motor unit.

Craftsman 1/2HP Door Opener won't stay closed

Loosen the chain and run the opener until the sprocket runs in the counter clockwise direction and stops. Now with the door in the open position replace the chain. This will get everything back into sync but I hope you remembered where all those controls were. You need to put them back in their original positions.

Garage door will not open

You can fix this by loosening the chain enough that you can lift it off the sprocket. Then run the opener until the sprocket turns counterclockwise and stops. Now with the door in the open position replace the chain. This will get the chain running the right direction. You will have to adjust the open and close limits along with the force adjustments but that will all be covered in your owners manual.
