Question about Royal VF1012mx Shredder

1 Answer

Started shredding paper 4 sheets at a time. Auto function continued to run blades/motor even when paper was not being fed. Stopped using it and turned it to off position after several feeds (total of maybe 5 each with 4 sheets of paper) and the unit was smoking. It continued to smoke even after being turned off. I have already unplugged and cleared as much paper jam as I can see in the blades... overheated indicator light is never even came on. After letting it rest for about an hour, I fed a single sheet of paper through and it started smoking again. Any thoughts on what to do? Thanks!

You should open the top up so you can see whats going on inside. take a good look at the pcb and see if its going "black" in any places(not a good sign) Remove any paper lying inside the unit...check and see if its paper, the pcb, or the motor that is "smoking"...have you ever lubricated the cutting blades.???

My Staples 16 sheet Microcut shredder starts the shredding operation after I push the button and continues the shredding operation after I shred a paper. How can I get the shredding mechanism to stop...

It's a tedious process to clean it out. Most auto switch shredders use either a tiny little lever or an optical sensor in the paper feed slot. Usually removing the shred head, picking all the paper out and blasting all the dust out with air will clean it up. Then run a few sheets of paper with shredder lubricant (basically clean mineral oil) to oil the blades and it should be good to go again. Just be careful cleaning that cutting head. I've donated many drops of blood to office equipment over the years.

Paper has wrapped around the cutting blades and is packed in tight. How do I clean this?

    • 1 Unplug the paper shredder. Empty the shreds from the collection bin. Pull as much stuck material as possible from the top and bottom of the shredder blades with pliers.
    • 2 Place the paper shredder back on the collection bin base and plug the shredder back in. Rock the shredding direction back and forth between forward and reverse. Pull on the jammed pieces as the shredder shifts between directions.
    • 3 Run the shredder in reverse continuously once the paper jam is cleared. Make two passes across the cutting blades while drizzling synthetic shredder oil. Switch the direction to forward to run continuously for one minute.
    • 4 Lower two sheets of clean paper into the shredder. The paper removes excess oil, metal fragments and debris from the cutting blades. Blast the blades with compressed air when you notice a build-up of small paper scraps that may cause a jam.

Why is the fellowes blade still rotating even when there is no paper?

It is possible that a small shred of paper is lodged at the sensor underneath the cutting blade.
    • 1 Unplug the paper shredder. Empty the shreds from the collection bin. Pull as much stuck material as possible from the top and bottom of the shredder blades with pliers or use canned air and blow the edges of the blades.
    • 2 Place the paper shredder back on the collection bin base and plug the shredder back in. Rock the shredding direction back and forth between forward and reverse.
    • 3 Make two passes across the cutting blades while drizzling synthetic shredder oil.

Hello my nane is Tom. The shredder doesn't work. It will run in reverse but when I turn it to forward it run for a second or two than stops. I looked and I can't see anything jamed in it.

I got mine to work by running it on reverse for a moment then sliding it to auto. It stopped. Then I did it again. This time auto ran just for a second then stopped. I did it a third time but I had a sheet of paper ready in the feeder. Ran on reverse. Slid it to auto and it took the paper and shred it. I did it a fourth time. Reverse slide auto and feed shred the paper. Fifth time Auto shred the paper without reverse. :)

Paper always packs up in the blades and it will not cut more than 1 sheet at a time. Sometimes not even that. Any solutions for this? I constantly have to dig the paper out of the blades, even after...

All x-cut shredders should be oiled. Buy some shredder oil ( this is a lightweight oil ) from your local store then pour some of the oil across the cutting blades where you insert the paper. After putting the oil in run the machine in reverse...this will help get the oil all thro the cutting mechanism. Then start shredding 1, then 2, then 3 etc, etc sheets at a time...when you hear the motor starting to "labour" to take the sheets thro'..then you have just about reached the point where "thats its maximum". You should occassionaly shred a sheet of paper with a bead of oil on it ( in an "S" pattern) to help keep the mechanism lubricated. Running the machine at about no more than 75% of its maximum capacity and regular oiling will prolong the machines life.

My shredder overload light comes on immediately with only one sheet of paper inserted and it won't go.

Try running the machine in reverse and putting some shredder oil onto the cutting blades to loosen things up. Then try running the machine in the forward direction but hold the paper in the eyes but dont let it go into the shredding blades...see if it runs forward.!
If it will do this then slowly try paper 1 sheet at a time..but put some shredder oil onto the sheets of paper you are shredding.
If the overload light still comes on without even letting you shred 1 sheet of paper then you likely have another problem...maybe the motor or pcb..you can contact Royal at 1-800-524-0799 for parts assistance.

ROYAL RL170MX Shredder won't shred

Did you ever put shredder oil onto the cutting blades?????
The blades can clog with paper dust and then it can't shred as many papges as it should or even jam completely...you should occasionally shred a sheet of paper with shredder oil poured onto the sheet.

My paper shredder stopped working

First things First...UNPLUG THE UNIT. It sounds like it has been fed too many pages at one time. You may also want to dump any shredded paper so there is plenty of room for the shredder blades to pull in the paper. If the paper catcher is too full the blades can grab shreds from the bottom and stop the blades movement. Just be careful. Shredders can be dangerous.

Paper Shredder blades do not turn, even though motor is running

yes, it's the plastic gear that's shredded in this shredder. the drive gear on the motor is metal, as are the gears attached to blades. between is a single plastic gear which is chewed up the instant resistance is great enough. fabulous engineering. not a difficult fix, but where does one find the replacement part?
