My printer suddenly in the middle of a print stopped printing black. I have changed the cartridge twice but it still does not print. Strangely, it prints a paypal receipt but about 1/3 the density that it should be, but it will not print any MSWord documents. the colour seems OK. I've checked Ink Management/Ink Volume and it shows black as full. It has gone through the cleaning process several times without success, and the Test Sheet prints only the colours.

It is a known defect among many PhotoSmart printers, including the 6510. The black ink was programmed to fail at between 50 to 60 black print cartridges. One HP whistleblower said a bug in this programmed failure causes the black ink to suddenly stop printing after 5 to 6 black ink changes instead. When you call in, they offer to sell you a new printer! The service guy I spoke with was extremely nervous. I refused to buy a new printer, given I had put less than a ream of paper through mine. I was on hold for about 10 minutes, then told there was no supervisor, but given an email address to write to. Three weeks later, still no response. Yes, a class action lawsuit needs to happen, not just for the printer malfunction, but for the hours I soent trying to fix it, and new cartridges I bought, thinking I had bad ones.

Problem is with carriage unit.

I have an HP DeskJet 1220C that has been working fine for two years now. All of a sudden it can only print in pink and black. It is driving me crazy. I have tried the following without any success:

1. Replaced the cartridges twice
2. Aligned and cleaned the cartridge from the
computer
3. Soaked the cartridge head in hot water,
and made sure that all three colors will bleed
out of the head
4. Cleaned the cartridge contacts with an eraser
5. Cleaned the cartridge contacts on the printer
with a brush

Is there a cure, or is it time for a new printer?

It sounds like your printer setup has changed to generating black by MIXING the color inks... if you run out of the cyan and yellow it will do red in spite of how many changes you make of the black cartridge.

Investigate the setup for the printer to make sure it is set for black from the black cartridge.

are your rubber washers still in place? Are you using OEM cartridges or refilled?

There is an un-acknowledged issue with these printers having problems like that ....

They end up replacing some big parts inside it.

Change the black ink cartridge.

your senser is off you have to tak it in for minor repairs

hmm...maybe your print drivers went off line?

remove them, and go here for a fresh set

happens sometimes from power glitches

ppls. remove the cartridge and close the cartridge door hear the sound if it is not comming then change the cartridge and then check
