You probably have holes in your grids and will need to replace them. You can find a manual at http://www.pentairpool.com/index.htm
Just follow the menu's to get to filters and manual's be sure to have your model number.

Reference your pressure gauge as the 12:00 position. Going clockwise-
12:00 is Filter, normal running position
2:00 is Waste, water goes from pool and exits the waste line, bypassing filter.
4:00 is Closed, used only when servicing equipment
6:00 is Backwash, reverses water through the filter and goes out the waste line.
8:00 is Recirculate, water bypasses filter and returns to pool.
10:00 is Rinse, water goes through filter and exits to waste line, used briefly after backwashing to clear sediment from filter.
Note that the "pointer," not the handle that you grab, indicates which setting you are on.

The pressure gauge on top of the filter only reads 5 psi. I backwashed and added DE and it still only reads 5 psi. It also read 5 psi after filter was backwashed and before DE was added. What prompted me...

Is there good water flow? Can you feel good flow at the pool return?
If so, using your hand, try to stop the flow. Does the pressure go up?
If the pressure goes up, something inside the filter is not presenting resistance to flow as is normal; it could be a broken element, etc.
If there is no flow or if the pressure doesn't go up, make sure that there is no obstruction in the line coming from the pool to the pump. Check the inlet basket, inlet strainer in the pump, look for debris in the pump inlet & pump outlet piping.

I was backwashing the pool and put it back to filter and it will not ****. Thanks Rob

After your pool filters on the "backwash" setting, you should move it to the "rinse" setting. With the pump off, set valve to rinse. Start pump and operate for about 1/2 to 1 minute. This ensures that all dirty water from backwashing is rinsed out of the filter to waste, preventing possible return to the pool. Stop pump, set valve to "filter", and start pump for normal filtering. If it still won't start, check for restrictions in the intake and discharge lines.

After you backwash the filter do you have to put in a powder through the skimmer?

If you're using a sand filter you don't use diatomite like you do on a DE filter. You should 1. Turn pump off. 2. Move valve to backwash. 3. Allow to back-flush till water is clear (check sight glass). 4 Turn pump off again. 5 Move valve to rinse 6. Turn pump on till water is clear again.7 Turn pump off, return valve to filter. 8 Turn pump back on again. No power is added to a sand filter. There are some materials to "clean" your sand perhaps twice a year, follow the manufacturer's directions for this.

How do i change the sand in the filter? I am getting sand in my pool.

You will simply remove the old sand from your pool filter and follow the instructions from your users manual like you are adding sand for the first time. In case you don't have it, I am going to paraphrase it for you below.

1. Be sure correct amount of filter sand media is in tank and
that all connections have been made and are secure.
IMPORTANT: To prevent unnecessary strain on piping system and valving, always shut off pump before switching Filter Control Valve positions.
The correct amout of sand can be determined with this link: http://www.backyardcitypools.com/pool-filters/Filter-Sand-Requirements.htm

2. Set your controls to the backwash position.

3. Prime and start pump according to pump instructions. (be sure all suction and return lines are open), allowing the filter tank to fill with water.

4. Once water flow is steady out the waste line, run the pump
for at least 2 minutes. This initial backwashing of the filter is recommended to remove any impurities or fine sand particles in the sand media.

5. Turn pump off and set valve to RINSE position. Start pump and operate until water in sight glass is clear—about 1/2 to 1 minute. Turn pump off, set valve to FILTER position and restart pump. Your filter is now operating in the normal filter mode, filtering particles from the pool water.

6. Adjust pool suction and return valves to achieve desired
flow. Check system and filter for water leaks and tighten connections, bolts, nuts, as required.

7. Set your filter to the "filter" position.

You just need to break the filter down and hand clean the grids inside the filter. This is something you should do once a year. As far as the water getting green you will need to get chloriene in the water. This is chemestry and the filter is just for filtering. One will effect the other but they are two different things. Green water will cause the problems in the filter you describe, So killing the alge should be done first.

No water coming out when I backwash. I cleaned

water level must be about the discharge (eyeball) in the pool to back wash. Check the hose connections to make sure that hoses off the the filer head are going to the right place Look for the words "Pump" , "pool" and "waste" molded into the valve. I've seen it a number of times where "Pump" and "pool" were connected the wrong way.

My new Hayward Pool Sand Filter won't backwash.

Hey!
Mine was doing the same thing. I had the hoses switched up. I had the hose from the pump connected to the port marked RETURN (on the Hayward vari pump valve). Not good! I also had the return line hose (from pool) connected to the port marked pump. It happens! The problem is I tried EVERYTHING ELSE before I found my error. This includes a trip to Leslie's to buy a brand new multi port valve (good thing they have a return policy) AND changing out my relatively new sand in the filter AND taking apart the vertical tube and each individual flange at the bottom to clean them out. Please check your hoses FIRST if it won't backwash! By the way...I've been a pool owner for 17 years. I think my experience worked against me since I didn't recheck my work at setup.
NOTE:
It might SEEM like your filter is working because you get suction at the skimmer and water rushing thru the return line into the pool. It's not working if your lines are backwards like mine were! My water started turning green!
