How do you set the timer on a 1996 hot tub? It has an old timer with things (prongs) that you have to push/pull?!

These types of timers were used and are still used for many different devices. The dial represents the clock and you pull or push for the hours you want the device to run during the 24 hour clock. For a hot tub you will want circulation for at least 4 - 6 hours a day. To circulate but also to maintain the heat. With a good hot tub cover and good insulation inside the tub your circulating time would be less and save you some money. Hope that helps. 6f0fd63b-b068-4b09-9479-fc1b67bc8e93.jpg 29c9802b-b80d-438e-9f6a-66c31c024fd8.jpg

if you have not been keeping the water balanced, there may be a buildup in the pipes inside the heater core. this would cause the heater to work harder, produce less heat transfer and cause the over temperature sensor to kick out before meeting the set point.

1) If timer dial does not rotate, then clock motor is not getting electricity, or clock motor is bad.
-Make sure time dial is seated correctly. Pull it off firmly and then push in firmly.
-Check circuit breaker is not tripped.
-Test across terminals 1 and 2 on timer for 240Volts.
-Test terminal 1 to ground and then test terminal 2 to ground to make sure each hot wire from breaker has power.
-If circuit breaker is tripped on one leg, the timer can appear to have power, but is only receiving 120V and not the full 240V, so the time dial will not rotate.
-Look for signs of high heat and burning.
-Check that no insulation, and only copper wire are under the screw-down terminal plate.
-Make sure that same gauge wire is used, and that stranded wire and solid copper wire are not under same screw-down terminal plate. The stranded wire will come loose.

2) WH21 is rated for 25 amps and has 1 year limited warranty:
If label on side of water heater shows rating of 5500 watts, then divide by 240Volts = 22.91 amps.
4500 watts = 18.75

3) Replacement clock motor is not shown for WH21 timer.

I have a wh21 Intermatic water heater timer. I installed the shut off and on switches. They are not working. I opened a manual and it stated to make sure the dial is pushed all the way in. I spun the dial...

You might have your Line and Load wires reversed.
Line wires come from circuit breaker.
Load wires go to water heater.
http://waterheatertimer.org/B220C.html

WH21 wiring: There are 2 Hot Line wires coming from breaker box that connect to terminals 1 and 2.
WH21 is SPST and turns off one Hot wire going to Load. So Load wires connect to terminals 2 and 3. Terminal 2 has 2 wires: 1 Line wire and 1 Load wire.
http://www.intermatic.com/~/media/files/intermatic/products/instructions/timers/wh21%20-%20english.ashx

Keep in mind that WH21 is 25 amp, 2Hp 240Volt timer that will work on water heaters up to 4500 watts. Look at label on side of tank to see wattage. All appliances and motors have labels.

Larger wattage water heaters require 30 amp water heater timers as shown following page:

This unit (WH21) was installed 1 mth. ago. This is my second unit I've installed with the first being for a friend and his has "NO ISSUES". In the last week mine the second unit has failed to...

You probably have defective timer.
I test timers, and some timers arrive defective.
I have not tested WH21, so check with your friend about the indicator light.

Mechanical dial timers make audible noise, and dial should rotate as time passes and keep exact time. If dial is not rotating correctly on new timer, then something is not working correctly. The level of timer is not an issue. It sounds like the motor gear is not engaging with dial.
To test timer noise, click manual override lever. You will hear same noise each time timer turns on-off.

WH21 is SPST 21amp timer which turns off one hot wire to water heater.
WH21 is rated to work on 4500Watt 18.75 amp water heater. Or smaller wattage.
Check label on side of water heater for wattage. WH21 is not rated for 5500Watt water heater.

There are many water heater timers:
Electronic timers give more precise time control and option for shorter on-off periods.
Electronic timers are quieter and don't need to be reset after power outage.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Boxtype.html

More expensive Intermatic WH40 timer is rated for greater capacity, and has replacement motors and trippers. WH40 is noisy too, but will last for years. WH40 is SPDT so it turns off both hot wires to water heater. I prefer SPDT, and have tested WH40 and other timers shown on link above.

The hot water recirc pump in my new house was equippped w/ this timer. There was no user manual, but it was set by the installer to run the pump during awake hours and shut it off during sleep hours. ...

1) Open link below so we are talking about same type of household system
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-recirculation-system.html

2) 15 minute interval is misleading.
Pins located on timer dial divide 24-hour day into 15 minute intervals.
You set timer pins and decide which 15 minute intervals you want ON-or-OFF. Do this by moving pins inward or outward with your thumb or ink pen. To check settings, manually rotate timer dial clockwise and listen for pump turning on-off..
Set timer pins for 4 consecutive 15 minute intervals, then timer runs for 1 hour.
After pins are set, then manually rotate dial to set current time.
Dial rotates as time passes, and pins click a lever that turns pump on-off.

3) 5-year Life span. Like all things plumbing, if you have hard water or sand-n-dirt in water lines, then pipes clog. And pumps clog.
Once motor begins to slow down, it overheats and burns out.
Water softener can keep sediment out of lines, but shortens life of water heater.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html

4) Real question: do you need a circulation pump? Do you need hot water at your faucet? Can you schedule hot water use, or does recirculation pump have to run several hours per day?
Recirculation pumps causes water heater to run more, the pump consumes 25+ watts depending on pump, and water savings claims of 15,000 gallons per year are fabrication.
Realistic water savings is 700-2000 gallons per year, assuming several folks in the home use water sporadically across a full day, and each time water is used people are waiting for hot water. It also assumes that you never want cold water at the tap and that refrigeration ice maker line prefers hot water to cold.

If you can find the points on the timer try sanding them down. If they were burnt and stuck the spa would have run continuous. When you pulled the timer you may have broken them free but a burn would have kept them from making contact. I hope this helps, if not you might try reversing the leads coming into the timer or wherever you unhooked it to take it out. good luck.

Dial Timer sticks between wash or rinse modes

Hello. Is the water getting hot? Usually the timer won't advance because it isn't getting a signal from the thermostat that is on the bottom of the tub, so it thinks that the water isn't hot enough to go through the rest of the cycle. That is if the water is hot. If it isn't hot then you may need a new heater. You may or may not need a new timer. Try the thermostat first because that is usually the thing that goes out and it is less expensive than the timer. You can order it from www.coastparts.com or www.marcone.com .
Let me know if you need anymore help.
