Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

Dropped my laptop. It didn't shut down or anything it ran just fine. When I turned it on this morning it would not start and prompted me to do a system restore. Started that but it didn't complete because it ran into an error. How do I fix it? Should I try recovery using the disc? My laptop is a Gateway MT6729

Hi adaery,

If your laptop still boots up to bios you should be ok, you should use the recovery disc so that you can check if there is a possible damage done to your harddisk. If it lets you install a new os you should be ok. Update me on the current situation.

Hope it helps,
thx

When you dropped it you will have caused the Hard drive arm to contact the surface of the hard drive, damaging it.
Unfortunatly, it looks like it damaged the Boot files, Its worth a try with the recovery disc, you may need a new hard drive if it fails with the recovery disc

If you can open the laptop also try to unplug/re plug your harddisk that might fix the problem. If not if you have a stock harddisk try putting it on. Also try to transfer your important files to another harddisk before using the recovery disk.

    Thx Banaple

banaple is tight, it would be worth taking the hard drive out and refitting it, you may as well re fit the memory while your at it.
    Good luck

If the crank sensor is failing, you should get a check engine light and a trouble code for it.
Have you had the computer checked for trouble codes ?

If it didn't go to sleep before you dropped it, then it's not going to sleep after you dropped. It's shutting down or malfunctioning because of something else. You could have caused the memory to shift, or the hard drive to shift or something that happened because of the sudden impact.

Severe corruption. Since you can no longer boot in any way in it it's going to be extremely hard to fix it. Better just reinstall Windows from scratch. Use the recovery cd that should have come with the laptop. If you don't have it then just use a disk borrowed from a friend and the key on the label.

I bet you got help and fixed it already, but I had the same problem. Just before it stopped working, I dropped it in a puddle by a curb and I thought that killed it. I didn't realize that my battery was dead! That was it, so charge it!

When I boot up the screen is all colors and lines

It sounds to me like your cable is loose to the lcd or the video card is not properly 100 percent seeded into the mother board. Prolly the cable in one way or the other, perhaps bad cable.

Toshiba Satellite shuts down and won't boot up again.

Have you installed any new hardware or loaded any new software lately? If not you might have some corrupt files. Reboot the laptop in safe mode. Just hit F8 a few times. It should give you a menu. Arrow to safe mode and hit enter. After it finishes booting to safe mode, do a system restore. Click Start>click Start>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. Choose a date before a couple of days before you noticed anything happening. Restore will take a few minutes. When it's restored and booted, I want you to do one more thing. Click on start>run>type in cmd and hit ok. This will take you to your command prompt. Type chkdsk /f It will tell you it can't run it right now do wan't to run it the next time you start up? say yes. Close the window. Restart the computer and the check disk program will run and fix your errors.
If this has fixed your problem please rate it as fixed. If nit, just add a comment add I'll be happy to help you out more. Thanks.
