Question about Briggs & Stratton Garden

4 Answers

Bolens MTD push mower with B&S 4.5HP 10H902-0285-E1 (SN-03122354).. Runs rough (pulsing) after cutting on an incline where mower was tipped to the right (carb) side.. It seems as if oil leaked over into the carb/intake.. removed carb, cleaned, replaced diaphragm, and reinstalled.. now running smoother but low RPM and will hardly cut without bogging down or stalling.. I cannot find any adjustment screws on this model carb - is that correct? I cannot find a diagram of the linkage springs.. and should I suspect a blown gasket somewhere?

This is probably not a blown gasket issue. A bad head gasket can allow oil to enter the cylinder head/combustion chamber if it's not sealing off the valve area. A simple suggestion is to check on the engine opposite the carb side for the oil/crankcase breather. It will have 2 screws holding it onto the block. It has a type of filter media in it that traps excessive oil and oil vapors from the engine. It is also connected by a tube to the air filter housing. When you tipped, you probably put too much oil in the breather and it was inducted over to the air filter/carb intake side.
Clean or replace the breather after checking it and also make sure you haven't overfilled the Briggs with oil and only use SAE 30 in the engine. Muti-viscosity isn't recommended in summer unless you run synthetic, then it is OK.
Please vote on this solution.

Well... that wasn't the problem.. I finally removed the carb again and danged if the diaphragm wasn't pulled in from the edge a little and misshapen - actually separated into 2 halves in some places.. my guess is the carb housing isn't making a good tight seal all the way around.. off to the parts place tomorrow for another diaphragm and maybe a new carb housing..
When I installed the last diaphragm I believe it came with a gasket too but the old one didn't have one on so I didn't use it.. seems to me the instruction mentioned not using one for my particular model..(?) Any thoughts on that?
    Thank you for your help..

I really hope this clears things up for you as I haven't worked on these tank mounted carbs before.

If you suspect a carb problem that's causing the diaphragm to pull in then just buy a replacement carb, they are very cheap and come with a diaphragm kit in the box.

Bolens is now owned by MTD. Find parts for your machine at http://www.bolens.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/topcategory_10151_15953_-1 or your local MTD/Bolens dealer

The bigger challenge you will have is getting the engine running again unless you have maintained it the past 7 years. My free advice is get the motor running and make sure the tractor still functions before you start adding accessories. Once you have driven it around the block once or twice, then get the parts you need to operate the deck. I think these parts will be a little pricy.

I say these things because of a similar experience with a International Cub I got. I spent a lot of money to get the mower running before I got the tractor running, reliably. I didnt get my fair value from my $ as a result. I then bought a geenuine Troy and have never looked back. (MTD owns the Troy brand now also.)

Good luck with your project

Yard machine 21'' push mower runs 2 to 3 seconds cuts off.

Tip the mower up on it's side with the dipstick tube on the down side and collect it in a suitable container. The gas you can do the same. When I drain old fuel, I mix it with a lot of fresh fuel and a bottle of dry gas then run it in my car.
