Base from the description of your problem this can be a driver problem on your video card, what you can do here first if this is the first time you have the problem is to do a System Restore on the date when everything was working.
To do that if you're using XP click Start > All programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore and from there just select the date when the computer was working fine and follow the wizard computer will restart itself to complete the restoration and once back check if its fine already.
