Where are the screws located and how many are there? I removed the control panel cover and the only screw I see is in the rear left corner of the top.

Pry off the control panel, remove the scanner cover, remove all the screws (usually star type) then the whole top section should come off. You should clean the scanner mirrors while you're in there.

Sharp al 1000, the scanner is on and goes right and left all time

The simple fix is to clean the reference strip under the glass. There is a white strip under the left edge of the glass that the scanner reflects off of in order to set up the scanner bulb intensity. When this strip gets dirty the the machine just keeps trying. I would remove the cover on the left side glass area with the 4 screws. On the bottom side you will see the white strip. Clean this with glass cleaner. While your in there I would go ahead and remove the large glass. Turn off the main power and pull out the scanner bar and clean 3 mirrors. One is the "slot" in the main scanner bar and then the 2 in the assembly to the left that trails the main scanner bar. Once cleaned put it all back together and this scanner bar "referencing" issue wil go away. If it does not (which is rare) then there is a problem with the scanner/ccd unit and the machine is really not worth repairing at this point.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Hello, i keep getting error #6 message on my printer...i clean the glass both top and bottom with a micro-fiber cloth with no results

What do you mean "top and bottom"? Are you removing the glass from a flat bed printer and cleaning the bottom side?

Please clarify if this is an all in one machine or provide the model number so I can give more detailed information.

If its an HP printer with a flat bed (printer that you place the paper on the glass in order to scan, copy or print) then the place you need to clean that it is refering to is not the glass where you place your document. It is a small square of glass that is usually under the rollers off to the side on top of the flat bed area. You should be able to put your hand under the hood of this area and pull upwards to release it. You will find the small piece of glass to clean under the rollers right there. Wipe it off and this should solve your problem. After wiping it, unplug the printer from the computer and power supply for a couple of minutes. Plug the power supply back in before connecting to the computer and allow the printer to warm up and then connect to the computer. This should remove the error code.

I want to clean the underside scanning glass of the HP C4180 scanner/printer because when I scann, the top is clean, but the scaned pictures look like they have little specks of dust all over the scanned...

It takes several steps to remove the glass carrier for cleaning, but it's not really difficult. You'll need a T10 Torx screwdriver, eyeglasses cleaner or similar, and a lint-free microfiber cloth.

1) Remove usb and power cables. Flip the front covers open (revealing the cartridge-insertion area). Remove 2 screws from the right-side panel, and remove that panel.

2) Open the photo-paper holder on the left side, depress plastic tabs on its top and bottom so it can swing out 90 degrees, and remove it.

3) Remove 2 screws from the left-side panel, and remove the panel. This exposes the gears of the paper-handling mechanism; take care not to move the gears. Disconnect the three ribbon cables connected the bottom circuit board.

4) Flip up the LCD, exposing a screw. (Note that this one is shorter than all of the others.) Remove the screw. Lift the scanner lid and remove two screws just behind the rear of the glass. Close the cover. Lift the rear of the glass carrier, then slide it back slightly to remove it. Take care not to move the scanner bar that remains in the main body of the machine.

5) Keeping the lid shut, flip the glass carrier over over. Spray cleaner on the glass and wipe; repeat as needed. I use a bright light at a low angle to check for particles on the glass.

To reassemble, just reverse the steps. Finish by cleaning the top of the glass.

How do I get the platen glass off of my M20i? Either it is stuck or I'm doing something wrong. I need to clean the under side of the glass. Can anybody help?

1. Remove the Document Feeder
2. Remove the Doc Scanner
3. Find the hooks on the Doc Scanner to the right and left to separate the glass frame from the plastic scanner housing.

That should give you access. Best of luck.

Haze on INSIDE of HP 2610 AIO scanner glass - how to remove glass?

with the 2610, on the right side remove gently the coverplate and then slide the under panel down. There are four places it attaches to the printer case one at each corner approximately. you can try to do what I did and use a greenie flathead screwdriver to pry it free, or do the not so obvious but much easier and kinder to the machine version of pushing it down to get the L shaped plastic pieces to release from the upside down L underneath. then there are three size T10 hex or star shaped screwdriver screws to release three of the four sides. I never could get the front silver fitted piece off, but was able to remove the glass. DO NOT CLEAN WITH WINDEX...IT LEAVES RESIDUE. USE VINEGAR. ALSO, USE WHITE GLOVES AS any dust you get on it cleaning it will leave small fibers on both sides. I used a special glass cleaning rag and then gently replaced it. note which side the black strip goes when you remove the glass!
