Question about Air Conditioners

Intertherm rooftop air conditioner problem

I am trying to figure out a problem with an older Intertherm roof top air conditioner that has a heat strip installed. The air conditioner seems to work fine with all the fan speeds but when I attempt to turn on the heat, it feels like there is some heat there but fan either only blows out very low or none. This is on a houseboat that has two of these and the other unit seems to blow fine with heat strip on. I do not know if the is a heat strip failure of some relay or control problem or what. Also if you can diagnose can you tell me where the best supplier of parts for this brand of unit. Do not have the model # [sorry] but do know the boat is a 1983 and I am quite sure it is original.

With two units of the same make and one works right and the other does not you can use an OHM meter to check the resistance through the heaters on the good one then compare it to the readings on the one which is not performing. NOTE: with the power off of course.

The electric heat strips inside the unit could be burnt out or the thermistor that contols HI limit could be open.

90 model electric unit heat up, shut down when time for fan to start. replaced fan assemblyalredy

I recently ran across this problem with an Intertherm air handler unit of a different model. The older sequencers were pressed together and after a period of years had worked themselves apart. This controls not only the fan relay but also the heat strips at the same time. The thermo disk was not operating the micro switches correctly as a result and had lodged itself between contacts keeping the fan on. The company (TOD) apparently realized this was occurring, as the new sequencers have metal saddle straps to hold the top half down onto the thermo disk correctly. I would suggest replacing the sequencer with the Exact same model as this is very important. (power off from all sources including the 24 volt first, and verify with a meter) Make a drawing of where the wires go and take a picture if necessary.

Intertherm ac roof top ac fan want turn

Try turning it by hand to make sure it isn't seized up. If it won't turn replace the motor. If it will turn, check the capacitor for the fan motor and replace if necessary. You can also verify you have power going to the fan motor.

How difficult / expensive is it to install a heat strip in a Dometic roof top AC? The unit I have has a mark on the knob for heat, but I suspect it was never installed.

Fairly easy. The only thing that you must figure out is how many amps the heat strips will draw. Make sure the fuses and the breaker switch can handle them. And be aware your electric bills will shoot up.
