Question about Hitachi 65S500 65" HDTV-Ready Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

We have an approximately 6 year old Hitachi 65S500 TV that was damaged beyond repair from a power surge. We are currently in small claims court w/ our village in an attempt to seek damages. What would be the current value of this unit if it were still in good condition?

Hello. Surfing this site 'cause mine's broke. But, maybe a non-technician can help just the same. If you're going to court, try asking some of the paralegals how values are determined for court cases. OR, what kind of depreciation the judge may use by taking the value at purchase less a percentage per year owned. I say ask paralegals because you'll find them in civil courts records departments (places like a register of deeds office). You could also try asking an insurance adjuster, but not anyone you do business with as they often use simple inquiries to blackmark you in the national insurance database sending your premiums up. Hope this helps!

We had a power surge and now the tv will not come on. is there a diagnostic sequence we can perform to see if it is repairable?

Time for the repair shop, but also check that the surge protector has a protection guarantee. A number of brands do and it may cover the repair/replacement cost.

Although the manufacturer only give a 12 month guarantee it is down to the retailer to sort faults. Under statutory rights you have up to 5 years to male a complaint. Get a quote for repairs and issue a claim in the small claims court.

Severe lightning storm last night and TV not on surge supressor since I thought it was unplugged (cable box was but unfortunately TV was still connected). The unit will click "on" with remote but no...

It's impossible to say without physically examining the equipment and testing it, there is no DIY option unless you're a competent electronics technician/tv repairer. Obviously, having this done costs money even if the answer is that the set is beyond repair.

You haven't stated the make and model of the tv, nor it's approximate age, but if it's more than five years old repairs may be completely uneconomical.

My 50 inch hitachi projection tv keeps powering up and down.

First it is not an emergency.
No Legitimate repair company should be that busy.
Call Hitachi and get an AUTHORIZED Hitachi dealer to service your TV.
Your problem is beyond self help/
Unplug the TV until it is repaired properly or you will do more damage and have a much larger repair bill.

Hitachi 53" Projection TV (Ultravision)

WoW a 10 year old Hitachi TV. I was authorized for these sets. The problem could be one or a combination of many problems. These sets have the stand up type regulator PCBs that went bad all the time! Also could have a Power regulator IC defect. A sweep power supply problem . The flyback did go bad once in a while on these sets. If the set got a power surge, thers like 5 IC's that pop and 12 Diodes that short along with the display IC. If your not a tech You shouldnt attempt to experiment with the set yourself, so It probably wouldnt pay to fix this set If you have to pay a tech to work on it? It all depense on how good the CRT's Are. If you can get a servicer to diagnoise it at a decent price and check the condition of the tubes, Maybe it would be worth investing some money into this set, as these are or were very very good TV's. The balls in your court now. Good Luck
