Question about JVC GR-D290 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

1 Answer

Hi, the video monitor is damaged, it has strange lines and a permanent black smudge on the right side screen. These are not external surface markings, they are internally generated and pixel related, can it be repaired?

Your broken LCD screen can be replaced fairly inexpensively. However, it’s not a user serviceable problem and will need to be diagnosed by a qualified service technician.

Screen is white with black vertical lines upon booting up. I can't get beyond this screen.

The video card (built-in on the motherboard) maybe faulty or the LCD screen is faulty.
Connect an external monitor to the video port of your laptop, power up the monitor first then boot up your laptop. If the video card id OK then the laptop will automatically divert the video to the external monitor. Then the problem is a faulty LCD screen.
If the external monitor also displays black vertical lines then you have a faulty video card and since it is part of the motherboard it is impossible to fix.

Hi,
This is definitely a display issue ,going black could be the inverter or cable, as you are getting vertical line, it seems you need to change the display. It seems the heat produced by the video card in your system is too high if the cooling is not enough it might give you this problem due to over heating. Maximum GPU Temperature (in C) 105 C for nvida GEFORCE GT 120M.

The screen resolution for your laptop is WXGA++(1600 x 900) which is 17",for this kind of display I would say display nothing less than 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 is high defination (HD) display.

The GRAPHICS card you have in the system it has

  • Maximum Digital Resolution 2560x1600
  • Maximum VGA Resolution 2048x1536
  • Maximum GPU Temperature (in C) 105 C
  • Maximum Graphics Card Power (W) 50 W
Try to decrease the hardware acceleration of the video card and check how it works.Other wise replace the display.

HI there,

I'm a pro laptop repair/rebuild tech. I do not believe the numbers lock and screen are related excepting that the screen plugin on the board affected a curcuit when the screen failed, which is exactly what your problem is. I would replace the screen and the inverter (directly under the screen behind the bezel at bottom) and you should be good to go.

Best Regards,

Marcus

My toshiba laptop has a thick white line down the screen

The normal cause of lines across the LCD of a laptop is a damaged video cable. The unusual cause would be the video card itself.

To determine which item is at fault, you need only attach an external monitor to your laptop's video-out, and then swap your monitor view to 'both' or mirrored (usually just the function key (FN), plus one of the Fkeys...look for an off-blue picture of a monitor on the Fkeys).

If the lines across the screen also appear on an external monitor, then the video card is damaged.

If the lines only appear on the laptop's LCD, but not the external monitor, then just the laptop's internal video cable is damaged.

Hope this helps.

Laptop screen damaged?

Nothing is ever broken beyond repair, but most of the time the cost of repair actually exceeds what you can purchase a new one for. And with 19" LCDs selling for around $139, you get a bigger screen and less money than it would cost to actually replace the screen on that monitor.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya.

I just had the same problem! Was afraid I needed a new video card. (--a suggestion found on another forum.) But a friend suggested a low tech solution. After turning the computer off, I opened the CPU casing and blew pressurized air inside to clear the dust out and the problem went away. Hope this helps.

Having trouble

You have a collection of unrelated problems I am affraid.
#1 The white line is a terminal LCD panel and will need to be replaced. Repair is far more expensive then it is worth.
#2 The video card sounds like it is dead as well. Sounds strange that you can see the test signal though right? Wrong, the test signal is running through the internal section of the controller IC. As soon as you connect a video cable to the monitor it tries to swap to external mode which is damaged, hence no picture.

Check the video board for any signs of damge to the transistors at the input, time to drag out the magnifying glass.

Hope it helps, good luck =)
