Please see the link below. It is a step-by-step guide with illustrations on how to check and see if the cartridges are installed properly. I would also suggest you try to remove and reinstall the cartridge(s)
To Save the color ink you can change the printer settings to Black Only.
To Setup:
Press START Button.
Select RUN Command.
Type these commands in CAPS.
CONTROL PRINTERS and press OK or Enter.
Now you will get Printers & Faxes Window.
There you select the ink jet printer which you want to change the color settings.
Right Click on it and Select Printer Properties later.
Select Printing Preferences
There you can see lot of window tabs (just like a worksheets). Depends on printer in any of the TAB you can see the option Black Only / GrayScale Printing Only.
