Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Omega WD1067 washer/dryer. The machine cant turn a heavy load (eg 3 medium absorbent towels), only a light load. If the load is too heavy the drum tries to get around but fails, I can hear it trying` (?solenoid) and see the load trying to get around the top but it falls back and tries in the other direction. Otherwise works well. A small load is OK. I wonder whether you know what part is needed, I was told maybe the Capacitor or bearings ( probably bearings at least as I can hear the crunching a bit). Thanks, Hugh

Machine has a belt -(so it therefore cant be the coupler, right?). I took the back panel off...The belt is in good condition and tensioned well, ie is not slipping. The drum turns by hand fine also with little effort while machine off. I then put a heavy load in and had to helped the drum to turn by manually spinning the wheel, it will then continue to turn for but seems to slow down and sometimes will come to a stop.
So what do you think now?
    Thanks

I would say your most likely problem could be the bearings or coupler. The heavy weight could be pushing down on some worn bearings causing it not to turn well. If this is a belt drive type, check that the belt is not too loose and just spinning. A worn motor may also do this, but most common possibility is the bearings. One good way to check your bearings is to try and spin the tub manually by hand and see if it spins easily.

I would think motor is wearing out if the tub spins easily by hand with a full load.

My 9150 doesn't spin well and my clothes are very wet, when they come out. Then when I try to spin & drain only, it wants to run for 4 hours. Looking at the problems how good of a product did I buy.

from the description you are giving, i would guess that: 1. the "coin-catcher" ahead of the pump is plugged. 2. the tub is overloaded. 3. the loads are heavy, bulky [ blankets, jeans, towels]. when a load is too big or it is all very absorbent materials, the machine tries to balance the load before it goes into a final spin, it will not spin on high if it cannot balance - remember, ten towels or pairs of jeans soaked with water is darned heavy - mix the loads i'm familiar with this machine because i have one, i repair washers and dryers as part of my job, in my opinion, the duet is the best and most reliable washer available

Check the Vibration damper rods to be sure that...
1. They are there and mount is solid.
2. If they are broken in 1/2.
3. The plastic knuckle mounts are not missing/broken.
4. There is oil in the shock absorber/spring section of the rods.

Also - there are suspension springs on the bottom of the tub that could be broken and/or missing.

Replace/repair as necessary.

IF THIS IS A BRAND NEW INSTALLATION - be sure you have removed the basket shipping pins (4) that secure the tub during shipping.

Wet towels & blankets stacked on working dryer

This won't affect drying time unless the load is so heavy it causes the cabinet to warp and disturb the door seal. If you haven't had any problem with this so far you can probably keep doing it. (The machine is designed to support the weight of a wet load in the drum, and should have some safety margin. But why not invest in a roll-around laundry cart like you find at laundromats and keep the wet load there until the dryer is clear?) You might need to be more concerned about rust starting on the top of the cabinet if the enamel is scratched, since it's not usually subjected to wet loads being piled there. You should also check your vent pipe frequently to make sure it stays clear with all the drying you do. Clogged lint screens and vent pipes will definitely lengthen drying time.

Only turns with light load

If this is not turning with a heavy load it can be one of or a few different things. The motor may be going bad and cant handle the heavy load or the drum belt may be slipping or the dryer drum wheels where the dryer rides on may be worn out.

If its the wheels the machine will be making a sort of a grinding sound when it runs and the dryer drum will be loose and wobbly inside the machine. The drum wheels and belt are cheapest, probably less than 10 bucks for both.
You will need to remove the front of the machine and remove the drum to get to the wheels and belt. It shouldnt take more than 1/2 hour or so to do this job.

The motor is another thing. 150.00 for the part, hours of labor and electrical connections. Clearly not worth it unless you have access to a cheap parts supplier. Check ebay for appliance parts suppliers. They usually buy up manufacturers surplus parts and sell them for 1/2 of what they originally sold for.

My old Hoover top loader Washer is noisy & doesn't spin out properly - how can I fix it?

Sounds like the switch which cuts the machine off when the load is unbalanced. My guess is that: This switch is being triggered too easily The springs holding the bowl up are either stretched or one is broken; The machine may not be level.
