Question about Intel Motherboard

1 Answer

My computer have an Intel Dual-Core Processor installed in a Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L motherboard. I re-installed Windows XP and when the computer reboots itself the video was gone and didn't come back in spite of several attempts to reset and power-off to reboot the computer. What happened and what should be done?

if your processor is 45nm arch, update your bios on fabricant site, only same model. (is a risk if the power goes out during the process). There are three versions, confirm before proceeding.

First thing when diagnosing a desktop computer problem, is check the Power Supply.

Really.

A Power Supply with a weak voltage power rail, can also emulate software problems.

(Emulate software problems; The bad hardware (Power Supply), can also make it seem like it is a software problem. It isn't. It's a hardware problem -> Power Supply )

1) Is your computer dirty inside? This will make the computer not work, and also 'kills' Power Supply's.
They overheat, and components inside the Power Supply fail.
(Go bad)

Know this;

1) If ALL of the LED lights were on at once, they would use less than 1 Watt of power.

2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts of power.

3) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts of power. Just depends on what Processor it is.

Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L?

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2693#ov

LGA 775 processor socket, and an Intel G31 motherboard chipset,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_intel_chipsets#Core_2_chipsets

Scroll down to G31 in the left column.
Also go back to the Gigabyte Support page.
Click on the Support & Downloads tab.
(Overview / Specification / Support & Downloads / FAQ / etc)

Click on the blue - CPU Support List tab.
(CPU Support List / Memory Support List / Accessory )

Your motherboard can support Processors that use 35 Watts all the way up to 135 Watts.

Point?
If you have a Power Supply with a weak voltage power rail; you may see LED lights light, and fans spin; but there will NOT be enough power to turn the Processor ON.

Do you have a multimeter to test the 3 main voltages?
OR;
Do you have a KNOWN to be good, Compatible power supply; to use for a temporary test unit?

Also;
When working on your computer FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions.
If you are not aware of what Anti-Static Precautions are, please post back in a Comment.
DO NOT work on your computer until you do.

Remove all Ram Memory modules. ('Stick')
Clean the gold plated contact pins with a pencil eraser.

If using an eraser on the end of a pencil; and not a solid eraser; refrain from letting the metal band of the pencil; touch the gold plated contact pins.

Rub across all gold plated contact pins, and up, and down. BOTH sides.
When finished use air to remove the eraser dust.
You can use a can of compressed air for computers, or air pressure from your mouth will be sufficient.

Handle the Ram Memory module by the BODY.
The Body is everywhere on the Ram Memory module, EXCEPT the gold plated contact pins.
The Body is coated with a see-through protective plastic,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Generic_DDR_Memory_%28Xytram%29.jpg

Reinstall the Ram Memory module/s. Plug the computer back into power. WAIT 1 minute, turn the computer on.

Sir,i have install 3 sata hdd on my motherboard gigabyte 945 GCM-S2L 1. 160gb 2. 500gb 3. 1 tb. my pc many times hangs on bootup and freezes then i disconnect the cable to turn off. how to fix that...

Do extensive diagnostic tests:

1. Set BIOS to default settings and do not use overclock settings, check.
2. Memory test, download ISO image, burn it onto cd and boot from it.
If memory fails after several hours testing: Replace memory
3. Flash the latest (original)[beta] BIOS version.
4. Connect just one (1) harddisk and test for longer time. *
5. Add second harddisk and test for longer time. *
6. Add third harddisk and test for longer time. *

* If connecting or adding harddisk leads to freezes, exchange that harddisk and retest.

What size power supply are you running? If you are not running a minimum of 400watt , I would anticipate issues with this type of processor. Since it is freezing right away, it could be bad memory. You can try memtest86.com to download a memory test tool to verify.

Secondly, you may want to reset the board by moving the jumper from normal mode to reset mode.

last thing, it's not impossible for a processor to be bad. Since it is an Intel processor; it should have a 3 year warranty on it. Any dealer who sells Intel should be able to warranty replace it for you.

Im not sure how much ram to use with my motherboard.

Your board can support 4Gb of RAM.

CLICK HERE for the SPEC sheet.

HERE is the memory support list, there is only 1 type of KINGSTON 2GB stick that is listed as compatible.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS as there are some known issues with this board and certain 4GB RAM configs as well as fixes for 1TB HDD space errors.

Always a good idea to make sure you have the latest XP service pack. In general, XP only recognises 3Gb RAM but mine runs fine with 4 in it.

When you crash, is there any Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) or any other output to your monitor or does it just shut down with no warning or error code or anything? If this is happening then you may be getting a CPU OVERTEMP condition.

Have you recently upgraded other components as well as your RAM?

Will my motherboard support a Core 2 Duo processor: GA-8S649MF (Gigabyte Motherboard)

Every system needs a rock-solid foundation, and that's just what you get with this Gigabyte GA-8S649MF motherboard. It features Socket 775 compatibility and support for Intel Pentium 4 or Pentium Dual-Core processors with 800 MHz front side bus speeds. Two DIMM slots support up to 2 GB of DDR400 system memory.

Uppgrade to a faster processor?

Hi
Pentuim D is a processor that has 2 x cpu in one and a core 2 duo has 2 cpu's plus 1 smart core bigger cache
you can only upgrade to a E2140 or E2180 processor on that motherboard
OR replace the board with a newer type

If you want to work the actual speed for the processor of a dual core take the speed for example dual core 1.8 x 2.1 =3.78 GHz
Core 2 Duo  1.8 x 2.4 = 4.32 GHz
