Whirlpool top load washer won't wash after filling

The hinge on the left side activates the lid switch. The hinge will have to be repaired or replaced.

Use a putty knife or a old CD to slide under the control panel on the right and left sides, where the control panel front meets the washer top.
This will release the clips that hold the control panel to the top cabinet.
Fold the cabinet to the rear.

Unplug the lid switch in the top of the cabinet on the left side.

Remove the brass clips holding the cabinet to the rear panel.
The cabinet will come off so that you can access the underside for the hinge and lid switch.

Need to Know how to remove top and cabinet

first, do you have phillips screws on back of console at bottom goin down or in front bottom? one or the other remove these then slide console forward and fold back on hinge on top. if no screws then clips are hidden on front edge on end plates. use putty knife from front to push and release lifting console at same time. fold back.
use screw driver to pry and release brass clips holding top to rear panel. unplug lid sw connector and pull cabinet body away from machine. top and cabinet is screwed together and removed as one piece. cabinet hinges under base on front and sits on top of sides.

How to remove the motor from the transmistion 700 series

you have to take the cabinet off first, that can be done by removing the control panel screws, hinge it back and then you will find 2 brass colored brackets that hold the cabinet to the base frame. remove them and the wiring harness from lid switch. the cabinet will pull off at a 45 degree angle from the base.
remove the 2 clips from the pump, on the front of the motor, and then 2 screws hold 2 clips onto the motor, remove the clips and that will let the motor loose from the transmission plate.
this will allow you to replace the "drive coupler" that is most likely what you need to replace.
part number 285753a from whirlpool. about 15-20 bucks.

Whirlpool Washer stopped agitating and spinning

the most common problem after a large load is the motor coupling has broke. it is what connects the motor to the transmission. it is not hard to replace if you can get the cabinet off the unit. you have to take the control panel loose and "hinge" it back to get access to the clips that hold the cabinet on to the frame. once you remove the cabinet, then take off the pump clips, the motor clips and then the motor. that will allow you to get to the coupling and replace with a new one. sounds easy but its not for a first timer. good luck and hope you can find this of some help.

Hello
Welcome to Fixya
My name is Huum,

Faulty Direct Drive Coupling (Whirlpool / Kenmore / Roper / Estate)
The Direct Drive (motor) Coupling may be broken. Many Whirlpool/Kenmore brands washing machines utilize a small, relatively inexpensive direct drive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other.

It can wear out over time or fail under overloading conditions. This protects your transmission from excessive loading.

Cabinet Removal - Whirlpool / Kenmore / Estate / Roper Direct Drive Models

**NOTE**
The diagrams referenced in this article are available for download in the Attachments section below:

1.) Preparation
It should be obvious but the first step should be to unplug the washing machine. Then pull it away from the wall a six to eight inches.

2.) Rotate Control Panel
Locate and remove the screws (items 49 on the Control Panel Diagram) that are installed in the base of the both the left and right side control panel end caps. Once the screws are removed, pull up and forward on the control panel. The control Panel will rotate toward the back. Tilt it back until the hinges catch. Allow it to rest there.

3.) Unplug Harness
With the Control Panel Assembly folded out of the way you should now disconnect the wire harness that connects the console to the main case. The harness plug disconnects from the top of the cabinet.

4.) Remove Clips
Use a flat head screw driver to remove spring clips (items 6 on the Cabinet Diagram) from both the left and right side of the cabinet top. This can be accomplished by inserting a flat head screw driver into the spring clip and pry toward the back of the machine. Once each clip is loose, feed the clip out of the hole in the rear panel.

5.) Detach Cabinet
Now open the lid. Use one hand to hold the lid open and the other to grab the front of the cabinet opening exposed when opening the lid. Tilt the entire cabinet assembly toward you by pulling both the front cabinet lip and the lid. This should release the rear locking tabs.

Use your knee as a lever to lift the front of the cabinet away from the washing machine base. This should release the front locking tabs and complete the removal of the cabinet from the machine.

WTW5800SW, safety switch needs replacing. How do I do it?

  1. Before replacing the switch check the lid hinge screws on the left side, if they come loose the switch will not activate.
  2. As part of the lid hinge, there is a rod under the cabinet on the left side that can be bent upward by holding the lid open and pushing on the rod.
  3. To replace the switch, insert a putty knife under each corner, push to release a latch. With console lifted, the switch is snapped into the cabinet on the left side.
