What's your Operating system?

If it's WinXP...does the drive show up in "Disk Management"?

To get to "Disk Manaegment" applet in Control Panel, do the following:

From your desktop (icon screen), Right-click on the "My Computer" icon and select "Manage"
Next, click on "Disk Management"

Is your drive showing up here?

If it is there, is it being assigned a drive letter?

Is the drive letter already in use?

If it is...then all you need to do is assign this particular drive a new (unused) drive letter and it it will then be displayed in "My Computer" as a valid drive.

Removeing panel from acer aspire to install firewire card

Generally you have two or more screws in the back of the computer, maybe a lever that you have to pull to release the side panel and it should come off, releaving the internals.
