Question about Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera

1 Answer

My XP SP3 notebook doesn't connect to various Canon Cameras via USB. There is the open and close sound, but then there's no further recognition. Has anyone faced similar problems? PS: I'm using a Canon printer via USB, could this be a reason why the cameras don't connect?

You need to plug it in and see if it is showing up as a usb storage device. sometimes xp will see it as this if the driver gets messed up. Try reinstalled the canon software which should fix this. You can get this from the canon support downloads if your cd has wandered off. Actually they are also pretty good at sending you a free replacement cd if you ask nice and they are in a good mood (sometimes they are grumpy and cheap so just download it then)

Try unplugging everything else connected to the usbs. Reboot then try just the camera. Depending on the computer some handle what is called legacy usb devices better than others. Legacy just menas thingsleft plugged in. The odd time they do get confused and a unplug and reboot (or two) and they behave again.

If that doesn't get it then you want to try the camera on a different computer. This is just to make sure the camera is working fine. If it doesn;t then the camera has the problem. I have had a couple of G's ( a3 a 4 and a 6) and they took better pictures than my rebel does so I'm inclined to get the camera fixed if its the problem. The usual advice here in this situation is to get a estimate first. Canon does offer a flat repair fee so ask about that. Sometimes the repair cost is close to what a new camera is worth. This is why you have to check the price of the repair and the replacement.

The problem is normally the driver or the cable.

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Picasa.

Can't load on Windows XP home SP3 system.

The software is probably just too old for the system. I would suggest Jargon Naturally speaking as a replacement. It is a very good voice recognition product and not too expensive.

Camera direct to computer connections are notoriously problematic. (Lousy with bugs etc.) I avoid the problem entirely by using a card reader ($15-20) combined with Picasa3 (free software from Google). Remove card from camera and insert into card reader, connect to computer via USB and download images with Picasa3. Works great and is relatively cheap.

I'm trying to connect my canon hv 20 to my macbook pro, and the computer won't detect the camera.

Connect via USB to see contents of the miniSD card. Connect via Firewire to do anything with recorded video/audio. USB setting may require further fooling around with camera settings to be visible on some computers, since the miniSD card should mount, just like a flash drive. I have one of these camcorders and this all works just fine.

XP will not recignize my ZR200 as a valid input device

On your computer, go to <start><my computer>. Right click on My computer and select "properties". Select "hardware" and then "device manager". On the drop down menu, select the hub in question and be sure it is not "disabled". Also be sure that the power options on this hub "never expire", as Windows default sets a given time for this....accordianman
