It means that your phone is not reading the SIM card. The physical contact points on the SIM card may be worn (if it's been removed often) or it may be a SIM card from a different network to what the phone is programed for.
If it's the latter, to remove the lock put in place by the Network Service Provider, you have to know which Network it is and the country it's from.
The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number, is required to unlock the phone. Type this code in your phone to get it: *#06# you can also find it beneath the battery.
I also need to know the make and model of phone, the network that the phone is locked on, and the country the network is from. Then I will give you the codes to unlock the SIM card.
