Brake pads jammed on rear cycle wheel

APOLOGIES!! I COULD NOT FIND A CORRECT CATEGORY OR SUBCATEGORY SO I AM AFRAID I HAVE JUST GRABBED AT THE FIRST THING THAT CAME TO HAND AND HOPE THAT I MIGHT FIND SOMEONE WHO KNOWS ABOUT CYCLES!! Something must have happened while my husband's bike was being carried on the bike carrier on our car, because when we took it off last night we found that the brake pads on the rear wheel have jammed tight onto the rim of the wheel and we don't know how to release them. There was no problem with the brakes before and there is no sign of the wheel having been buckled in any way. Alas, we do not have a manual for the bike. I am hoping that there is something very simple that we can do to remedy the situation, and I would be extremely grateful if someone could explain what we need to do!!

Most bikes have a brake cable adjustment where the cable goes into the casing from the handle and can also be adjusted by the cable at the brakes. First thing to check is some bikes have a rounded 'L' shaped metal tube that the cable comes out of that sort of clips into the brake housing. If the end of the tube pulled out of that housing and caught all that needs done is to put it back in, a very simple fix. It may be under a rubber grommit that keeps dirt and dust from getting inside the cable tubing, but the grommit slides easily on and off and stays on the cable.

What is the SPINDLE in the front brake system?

In the average brake system this refers to the tapered stub on the front suspension knuckle, which mounts the front hub and bearing assembly. It has a thread on the end for the front hub nut (not wheel nuts).

The actual appearance varies widely from car to car.

SI397 Ionic Breeze 3.0

Hi again,

For some reason, I think the system has hanged. My windows shows that you are still typing a message for more than an hour. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

Anyway to your concern, if you were able to take it apart, checking would require that you use a continuity tester set at X 1. You need to check from the plugs back to where it went inside. The idea is to check the wires inside the cord. The meter/needle moving towards the extreme right indicates good continuity. Thereafter follow the two wires where they went inside. It maybe a circuit board, it maybe a fuse, or even the switch. The switch and fuse should also be checked for continuity.

Since your problem is a completely dead unit, then chances are the problem is among those listed above to be checked. If by chance none proved to be defective, am afraid that you have to seek the services of a qualified professional as all other tests requires a fair knowledge of electronics/electrical circuitry and components and possibly parts replacement.

Again our apologies.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
