Hold your top and bobbin thread for at least 5 stitches, and that the machine is threaded right.

Please expand on "stitching unevenly." Is the thread looping above or under the fabric, are the stitches uneven, is it skipping stitches????

First thing to always try is a brand-new needle.

Why is the bobbin thread looping and catching on my sewing machine? The stitches are uneven, too.

Hi Sylvia,
Your problem is an un-matched tension of the threads. You mentioned doing an adjustment recently. That is the problem area.
If your bobbin thread develops loops on the top side of the fabric, you need to tighten the bobbin tension.
There is no easy method for this and you will have to do it slowly -
tighten, test, re-tighten, test.... until you get a near perfect stitch.
I haven't come across a portable device specifically designed to set thread tensions.

Ho can i get bobbin tension right?

Bobbin tension depends on the thickness of the fabric that you're sewing on. A cotton fabric should have medium tension...but a heavy wool would need a looser tension. Best way to get the tension right is to take a few stitches, then look at the bottom side of the fabric. If the threads are loose, then tighten the tension one notch or number. Sew a few stitches, then test again. If the fabric is pulling up tight, then loosen the tension and check again. Top stitches and bottom stitches should both be the same.

Simplicity Fashion Pro Sewing machine problems. Machine stitches are too loose on the bottom of fabric.

try setting the top tension to 4 or 5 & see if the machine sews any better, you should see a nob or dial with numbers or alphetbet letters on it, that's normally on the left side of the machine
also try changing the needle, it's possible that it's bent or blunt
also clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for loose threads & lint

I have a singer 7258 that I can not get the tension to loosen up on. The top stitch is straight across and adjusting dial doesn't help.

Hello

Adjust the tension

Load your sewing machine with one color on top, threaded through the needle. Load the second color thread into the bobbin and thread.

Fold the scrap fabric in half, and sew a straight stitch at least 2 inches long. Look closely at the seam. If you see loops of the bottom color thread on top of the fabric, proceed to Step 3. If you see loops of the top color thread on the bottom of the fabric, proceed to step 4.

Loosen the top tension. Since the top tension is so tight, it is pulling the bottom thread up through the fabric. Loosen the top tension by turning the numbered knob on the front of the sewing machine counterclockwise by one number.

Tighten the top tension. Since the top tension is too loose, the bottom thread is pulling the top thread down through the fabric. Tighten the top tension by turning the numbered knob on the front of the sewing machine clockwise by one number.

Sew a straight stitch 3 inches in length. Check the stitching. It is perfect if the threads meet in the middle, and you can only see the top thread on top and the bottom thread on bottom. If it still needs adjusting, go back to step 2 to repeat the needed steps.

Using two different colored threads makes it easier for you to see which thread is being pulled.

Always use proper precautions when working with electrical machines.

Brother XL2230 Elastic Overlock function not working properly

First of all check your needle size and utility, for the tension machine it must be the same on top and bottom example pull the top thread and the lower thread they must be the same.
When sticthing the elastic you must devide the amount of elastic versus the fabric : dise the amount before stiching
Hope this will help

Bobbin thread/feed dog eating fabric

This is a very common problem with really lightweight fabric and can often be cured (if doing straight stitching) by using a straight stitch needle plate and foot. The wider needle plate and foot openings on newer machines give the machine/thread a wider area to pull the fabric into the machine. By using a straight stitch plate/foot you remove the wide opening, eliminating the majority of the problem.

Also - try using a specially coated needle (Teflon or other non-stick finish). The thread feeds more smoothly through the needle and the needle more smoothly through the fabric, causing less drag into the needle plate opening.

Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to respond to this if you have further specific questions. We're always happy to help

Happy stitching,

If it was sewing correctly BEFORE the needle break...why did the needle break in the first place?...and what fixes did you make?
If it sewed properly...what changed?

Cut your upper thread close to the spool...make sure the presser foot is raised and pull the cut off thread section through/out of the machine from the needle area (sewing direction...do not pull the thread backwards!)

Clean out the bobbin area...remove any traces of lint or pieces of thread...look for any broken off needle pieces... brush the bobbin area out....then add a drop of sewing machine oil (but only if your manual says to oil that area).

Remove the needle plate to expose the feed dogs...brush/clean out that area too and add a drop of sewing machine oil...then secure the needle plate back on.
Replace the needle...do it again...yup...some needles arrive bad from the factory. Make sure the needle is inserted and positioned properly. Then thread the machine WITH the presser foot in raised position. (The thread needs to get seated into the upper tensions.)
..with the.presser foot down...thread the new needle.
Oh...and use the correct needle for the thread. (a universal 80/12 is standard).
Thread can cause issues too. Try a different bobbin, or maybe a different spool of thread to see if that makes a difference.
