Hi,
Visit this link & download manual, See page-6 & 23 for connecting modem cable, As you are new to this laptop, I would say at first you need to carefully read manual, so that you can identify port is used to connect which cable or device.

For connecting internet, The modem must be connected to phone line using 6 Pin, RJ-11 modem cable in RJ-11 port, this port located at right-side on the laptop.

I hope this will solve your problem,

Thanks for using fixya,
Good luck and have a nice day

Which Compaq laptop do you have? Usually the cover means that the laptop doesn't have that feature on the motherboard. These days many computers come with either a modem (RJ-11) or an ethernet connection (RJ-45) but not both. Modems are becoming rare so removing the cover won't help you.

You can get an external fax modem that connects to a USB port or one that fits your card slot from most computer shops.

I wish that I could be of more help.

All 4 hand units say "line in use" How do exit tis situation? hand units model KX-TGA410, baseunit KX-TGA131

A "Line in Use" message generally means that there is no dial tone detected. Assuming that all of the handsets are in Standby and any other phones are connected to that line are also on their hooks, then you need to determine why the base isn't getting a dial tone. This can be an inside or outside wiring problem.

I like to use an old wired telephone for testing since power isn't required to use the phone. You also need another RJ-11 telephone wire. Try connecting a new RJ-11 wire between the KX-TGA131 base and the phone jack. If there is a dial tone with the new cable, you had a bad cable. If not, try the alternate phone. If the test phone has a dial tone, then the KX-TGA131 has failed or has a power problem. If the phone is under warranty, contact Panasonic.

If neither phone has a dial tone, take your test phone to another jack connected to the same phone line (number), if available. If you have a dial tone here, then the problem is in the first jack or the wiring to the jack. You can try to repair the jack yourself. Remove the cover plate and look at the jack. If any wires are loose, reconnect them to their appropriate location. See http://www.lanshack.com/wire_phone_jack.aspx for the usual patterns. There are two types of telephone jacks, keystone and screw terminals. For the keystone type, you need a punch-down tool (available at many hardware stores in the electrical section) to put the wires back in place. Do not strip the individual conductors before using the punch down tool. For screw terminals, strip the wire before securing it under the screw.

If you do not have another jack or there is no dial tone at the second jack, find the incoming telephone service box. Open the box and check the wiring. If you find an RJ-11 jack, plug in your test phone and listen for a dial tone. If there is a dial tone, you have a wiring problem. Check the jacks as above. You may want to have someone else check the wiring in the walls if there are no broken/loose wires in the jacks. Your telephone company will usually offer the service for a fee.

If you can't test the phone line at the service box or there is no dial tone at the service box, contact your telephone company. They will test the service box and should repair outside issues for free. (Some providers are trying to avoid copper repairs.)

If you have DSL, you may need to check the line filter. This filter can disrupt the dial tone when it fails. If the filter is in the interior, you are responsible for the replacement. In my service area, the DSL filter was in the service box so my telephone company repaired it.

I hope this helps.

(I've had no line issues several times. Sometimes, it was the result of a contractor cutting through underground lines. With copper wire, rodents sometimes damaged those underground wires. Once it was simply an issue of a contractor who'd left one wire loose after upgrading the service.)

EL52500 Phone base & 4 handsets have static, message Line in Use. Bought new phone, charged, connected - it says no line. Have dial tone at phone line into house.

Sounds like your phone has a short. If you see the message "line in use" call your number, is it busy, now unplug your phone and call your number again, is it ringing? Indicates a short, possibly in your equipment. As for message " no line" is the electric connected to the phone and did you check for dial tone in tat particular jack with a known, working phone first...just to make sure there's dt @ the jack. Good Luck :)

I am unable to get a dial tone on the main set or the two handsets. I have punched the Line 1 and Line 1 buttons; I have punched all the buttons...but there's no dial tone and friends have called in and...

My telephone troubleshooting starts with an old corded phone as a test device. First, unplug the base unit and plug in the old phone. Do you get a dial tone? Try a new phone cord and check for a dial tone. If the new cord gives a dial tone, check if the cordless base unit gets a dial tone with that cable. If the cordless phone does not work and the older phone does, then the phone needs service. Do make sure the cordless phone base has power and that the handsets have good batteries (NiMH AAA) that are properly positioned. + up on the right hand side of the handset battery compartment and - up on the left. Do not touch the contacts on the handset or the ends of the batteries.

If you do not have a dial tone with the test phone, find where the phone service comes in. Open the service box and check how it connects. Newer service boxes use RJ-11 jacks (same as inside jacks) so plug your test phone in at that point. If it doesn't have this jack, there is a special connector that your phone company techs will have. Call and ask them to check the line. Do you have a dial tone? If no, call your phone company for service. If yes, then you have an interior wiring problem. Look at any exposed wiring for damage. Check if other phone jacks work. If only the one jack is not working, open up the outlet and look for a wire that has come loose or broken. Depending on the type of outlet, either strip some more of the insulation from the wire (if needed) and resecure it under the screw. For the other type of jack, you use a tool to press the wire into the jack (no need to strip the insulation). If the cover lifts off you can replace a loose wire. If the cover doesn't come off, then you would need to cut off the keystone and replace the entire keystone. (A plastic version of this tool will come with a keystone jack and better versions also sold separately at many hardware stores near where they sell other home wiring accessories.) Then replace the cover for the keystone. In either case, then retry with the test phone.

2 wire RJ-11 are pin 1 to position 3 and pin 2 to position 4. 4 wire adds pin 3 to position 2 and pin 4 to position 5. http://www.lanshack.com/wire_phone_jack.aspx has a picture with the current standard wire colors for the connections.

Any other problems that occur on both phones indicate a break in the wires in the wall.

Your phone company will service the problem for a fee.

I found the manual as a PDF: http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/support/Phones-Fax/Telephones/Expandable-Systems/model.KX-TG1033S .

I hope this helps.

No dial tone when pressing hook fax is returned

The only thing that could stop you from sending a fax or not get a dial tone, would be the connection to the phone line. Make sure the telephone wire is plugged into the line jack (not ext jack) and should go straight to the wall, without splitters or extensions. If you still cannot send a fax, try another wire or jack

Phone not working

If the VTech is plugged into a different phone outlet than your touch-tone, then I know what your problem is. There are two wires that are hooked up inside the outlet box that run to the jack that your phone cord plugs into. One wire is for the "ring", the other one is for "tip". If these two wires are hooked-up backwards, it will cause you to have a dial tone whether you press any number buttons or not. Don't fret...it's an easy fix. If you pull the cover off of the outlet and reverse the wires meaning that if depending on which two are hooked up to the jack, whether it's the black and yellow pair, or the red and green pair, all you have to do is loosen the two screws that are securing the two wires that are going to the actual jack, and reverse them. Then just tighten the screws back up and replace the cover on your outlet. You should be ready to reach out and touch someone immediately! Hope this helps and have a great day!

A new phone system I have bought requires the jacks in my home to be in parallel. If I remove the cover from a phone jack, is there a way to tell if it's hooked up in a parallel circuit? If it's not in...

A parallel phone system means all phone jacks are connected in a series. From phone jack A to phone jack B to phone jack C. That means if jack A is not functioning properly or has a short ,all other phone jacks in that series will cease to function. The other type of system is a home run system.Meaning all phone jacks are ran independently outside to service provider NID Network Interface Device. This is the best to trouble shoot because if one jack fails the others will continue to operate independently. The best way to check is to remove the lead from one side of the phone jack, after carefully removing from wall. Check for a dial tone at other phone jacks if no, replace lead at the initial jack. If dial tone returns you have a series system.

Message: phone off the hook

I am reading 2 different things into this post, so if I am of base let me know exactly what is happening.
If you are getting an off the hook message on the machine display, there is an actuator on the cover where the phone is on the machine that is for some reason not being actuated. The cover poped off a little, the actuator broke. But it is not turnign on a switch that tells the machine the phone is connected and on the hook.
Now if you are simply not getting a dial tone. What happens when you plug a phone into that jack? Do you then get a dial tone? If you get a dial tone on the phone and not the machine, then try connecting the phone into the cord of the fax machine to eliminate the phone line itself. If you do that, and you still have no dial tone on the fax machine only. The modem on the fax machine has failed and would need to be replaced.
I suspect a phone line issue, but unsure if you have checked that as of yet.

is your computer hooked up dsl or dial up? unplug all the phones and computer from the phone jacks.plug a corded phone into the jack and check for dial. if you don't have dial tone, call your phone company. if you do have dial tone, plug everything in one at a time and see if the phone line goes dead.if it does, the last thing you plugged in is the problem.
