Question about Akai Televison & Video

1 Answer

Hi there. I have a AKAI VCR model VS-606 (Audio HiFi) unit which has never been abused and never presented a problem. Recently I was playing an old video tape (which as it turns out had been spliced due to break) and was briefly in PLAY/FF mode and suddenly got very degraded video signal yet the audio was not compromised at all. The problem presents with other tapes now also, and whether using the HiFi mode. Is it feasible that something associated with the sticky tape used for splicing could have come off on the playing heads. Should I attempt to clean the heads with alcohol and cotton buds. I have never used cleaning tape in the unit. Thankyou. Phil. (pcm_saust@bigpond.com)

No! The best thing to use to clean it is Servisol Video 40. This can be got from your local electronics shop or online. This stuff leaves no residue and cleans much better. You can use the cotton buds with it too.
It's much better to clean every six months or so depending on use. As dirt and grime can cause problems to the heads if left on. If someone smokes where it lives it will need more cleaning as you will find out when you clean it first time!

How do I connect this system together to get it to work?

The manual for the amplifier and all the other units are here. Use the search feature in the top right with just the model number 'AT-5210'. Getting the items in the right order helps. The turntable obviously goes on top. The Amplifier goes in the middle and all the other units connect to the amp.

Can I tune an old (1994) Akai VS-G40EA to receive Australian digital TV stations?

No!
The only thing you can do is connect the VCR via a scart lead to a digital tuner box and record off that.

VCR is in locked position when play is pressed.

I believe Panasonic has taken over the service and distribution of Akai.  A check on the Internet for Akai will lead you to a service link. I have an Akai combo TV-VCR that I was able to download a manual for. Parts.com may have other parts for your unit. I need more info on your unit. Does it run in play? Rewind and FF? Does the counter move? If the unit functions mechanically, be sure your patch cords are properly connected - yellow for composite video, white and red for audio. Be sure the input is properly selected on you monitor or TV.

Just get a pair of AV cables, and connect Audio Out of the VCR (at the rear of the machine) to Audio IN of your TV, and Video Out of VCR to Video IN of TV. Select AV on TV using TVs Remote. Play the casette. You should be able to view the Video.
