Question about HP DeskJet 6540 InkJet Printer
Installed new HP cartridges, never a problem before, B/W is OK, but color one, its like it won't read that its there or something. Light blinks, message boxes on screen that I need to remove the protective piece of tape (already have). I took out the old one and replaced it with the new one the same as always, with the problem I put the old one back in. At first the old print cartridge seemed to be ok, except that its out of ink. Now, it won't recognize either the empty or the new one. Is it not making contact? Is there a wire loose? This seems to be a mechanical problem. Help help......
I work for the State of Alabama IT dept. and we have plenty of the 6540's in use. A very common problem I see every other week with these printers is the wire "spring" which is clearly visible when you remove the ink cartridge, will come loose and puncture through the data ribbon behind the ink cartridge. Examine the data ribbon for any signs of damage such as a hole or tear. If it has been damaged, the printer will definitely have some kind of error with that ink cartridge slot.
I believe there should be a recall on this model, as there is a small piece of plastic (that holds the wire spring in place) that frequently breaks. This flimsy plastic retaining piece has been reinforced on the newer 6900 series printers.

The color print cartridge is apparently defective in some way.
I had one that took the metal plate off when I pulled the tape. Didn't notice until I had the same thing that you are talking about happen. When I took it back the sales person pointed to the date on the box and said "it's expired". Evidently they DO have a shelf life. I then showed him the receipt where I had bought it a few days before. They gave me a new cartridge. I now check the dates (like milk) before I buy them and before I use them.

I have an HP Photsmart C4100 printer. I purchased remanufactured ink cartridges (both black and tri-colored) from Vivasmart. The black one works fine, but when I installed the tri-color, I got an error message that says "Print cartridge problem" The following print cartridge has a problem:
Tri-color. And I can't print. The screen on my printer says "Remove and check color cartridge." I have done this several times and it still won't print. I have turned off the power, removed the cartridges, and unplugged the unit, but it still didn't help. Any suggestions?
