I was shooting with my D70s today and got a CHR error. I switched to a new card and no problem (I hope...) When I went to download all my pics, I see that the camera created files win a different prefix- usually it names them DSC_##. The errored files are DQCJ## and are unreadable. Is there any way to recover those pics? And why did it suddenly error out?

Nikon D 70 issue

If you lost the manual for this camera can be downloaded from Nikon directly here. The error message is discussed in detail on page 200. The CHR error you're seeing has to do with the memory card. It may be a simple as: it has no more free space to record more photos, or the card may not be formatted, or is damaged. Consult the manual for more tips and worst case, try replacing the card with a new one. Format it and try again. Good luck!

I have a Nikon D70 camera. I'm using a Lexar 2GB card inside. Problem focuses on the card. Previous to this moment, card has worked fine. Today, shot photos and when I hooked up the camera to download the...

First, memory cards don't last forever, so it may be time for a new card. Make sure you check the pins in your camera and the contacts in your card for dust/dirt. I'd guess you already looked at this, though.

I've had similar problems with cards that worked fine after I did a long format on the PC, not in the camera. You need to put it in your reader and then right click and pick the Format option. Unclick the "Quick" button on the format menu, and try it. You'll have to format again when you put it in the camera.

There's not too much you can do with a memory card other than this. If you still get errors, try again with a new card. If you get the same errors, you'll need to get the camera looked at in a service center.

I have a Nikon D50 with an error message "CHA"

This error indicates the following:
This card cannot be used (CHR) blinks.
Problem(s)
Error accessing memory card
Unable to create a new folder (on card)
Card has not been formatted for use on D70

Try another card
Format the card using your D70 (all images will be erased)
Check the card for visible damage or poor contacts.

You may have inserted a memory card that was been used in a different camera or the formatting process did not complete successfully.
I hope this helps.
