Canon MX310 Scanner Error

Hi there.
I haven't even got so far as to connect my Canon and my computer ... I took it out the box, plugged it in (tried to find the stuff they mentioned you needed to remove in their included instructions but couldn't find anything vaguely resembling it, plus i think it'd affect printing not scanning anyway) and switched on. It does a scan check or something, moves the scanner head to the plastic bar at the start of where your page would go and then it retracts again. Unfortunately the scanner head keeps trying to retract and makes an awful "clicking" sound as it tries unsuccessfully - it's already as far as it can go! And then I get the on/off light flashing and the orange alert light and the lcd says "Scanner Error". i have no idea what to do!

    my MX310 has just started doing this "clicking" as well. It has worked fine for 2 months. My wife said she pulled a stuck piece a paper out of the printer feeder earlier and it has been making this noise ever since.

    It appears that the belt that moves the scanner bar is skipping. It looks like the bar wants to keep moving to the left, but doesn't have room to go. How far to the right is the bar supposed to go when you power on the printer? Mine is going just past the edge where you would place the left side of the paper on the scanner bed, then it returns to the right.

    Damn, I looked everywhere on the damn thing and couldn't find anything vaguely resembling a lock icon with a switch/button. Any ideas where to find this on a Canon MX310?

    I checked the setup guide but couldn't find any protective cover near the cartridges .... there was some red tape (as implied in their doc) under my printer. not sure how it got there either tho.

    will try the reset memory option this evening. keeping fingers crossed!

    Have heard from Canon that the MX310 does not have a scanner lock/unlock button.

    Have also had no luck with trying to reset the memory.

    Now trying to get a useful response from Canon's Technical Support directly.

    Took mine out of the box today.  Took off all of the protective tape etc.  Plugged it in, turned it on.  Never comes up.  Runs through start up.  Moves the print heads back and forth.  Seems to be trying to move the scanner across but nothing moves. Then flashed scanner error and won't do anything else.

    same problem here. my mx318 began clicking a few days ago. the scanner head keeps moving to the left and the belt skips. warranty just ended this jan 09, bummer.

    took the unit to a canon repair center yesterday. still waiting for news from them. will update as soon as i get a response.

The scanner mechanism is locked....there should be a bar or button that slides to lock/unlock. Probably a picture of a lock.....this prevents damage while transporting the device....

    One thing you can try:

    Issue: A grinding noise is heard from the device.

    Solution: Press ON/OFF switch to reset the multifunction device

    Reset the device when it is not functioning properly.
    If the device is not functioning properly or to clear memory, reset it.

    1. On the operator panel, press and hold the button for one second. (The display will go blank.)

    2. Wait approximately ten seconds and then press the button again.

    3. Wait until the device has completed its cycling process before submitting another job request.


    Make sure that the protective cover is removed from the FINE cartridge holder.... There should be an easy setup guide for your scanner that shows you all you need to remove....

You can try uninstall and install printer driver or try a known good connectivity cable.

Why Canon MX310 won't scan error 114.0. how to fix

I have this copier too but only use it as a copier in my classroom. It's a stand alone. But can't print. There is no software to install on a computer so I don't know how to fix it if there's no software.

I haven't used my scanner for some time and now it won't work. A message says can't communicate with scanner, check scanner, may be not connected. we took it with us this winter but have checked all the...


Either the driver is corrupted or the scanner component is faulty.

Reinstall the driver for your device. If still a problem and the other functions work, but not the scanner, the scanner part is faulty.

Canon mx310 will not scan

For scanner machines itself try to check paper detection on feeder side, also observe for error indicator if so, scanner will not function.

Canon pixma MX310 scanner not working

I read somewhere that the printer/scanner must be plugged directly into the computer in order to scan.  I tried it, and it works.  Printing can be done wirelessly, but apparently not scanning!

Scan problems with Canon MX310

i have found the way to scan items from a Canon MX310 (on windows)

1.On windows go to control panel
2. click hardware and sounds
3. then hit devices and printers
4. then click on the Canon Inkjet MX310 seriers
5. then you will see scanner management click on scan Photos or docs
6.then place the photo or doc under the scanner and hit scan!

That is all the steps you will need.

Canon mx310 printer

Open up the hood, slide the ink cartridges to the far left, and check for a small silver piece that has dislodged from the far right side of the interior. You will probably need a flashlight to see. It is about the size of a folded paperclip. Even if it is still in place, remove it anyways because the printer identifies it as an obstruction. It serves no purpose so do not feel apprehensive about doing this, it will fix this problem.
