Question about Samsung PN50B860 Plasma TV

3 Answers

We have a 50" Sony Plasma TV (PN50B860) that now has 2-3 inch-wide vertical lines (about 4 lines) on the left hand side of the screen that come and go. What is causing this?

It only started doing this recently.

  • sbflinn Sep 05, 2010

Yes it does the lines with all sources, dvd, xbox, cable. Each source is directly plugged into the tv, some using hdmi others using coax or av cables.

These lines are caused by a failure in the buffer memory of the image processor. The entire mainboard will gonna have to be replaced and it will be expensive.

I can help you with your Plasma TV display problem.

Two reasons the integrity of your display of your signal may be compromised include:

  1. A signal problem. This is interference on your signal path. More likely on older sets not using hdmi or component cabling, but still, check the whole path of your video signal from the wall to your sat/cbl box, av receiver etc to the TV. Many fancy HD installations still have a weak coax link. Make sure all cables are not damaged in any way, the contacts are good, & they are not lying across power cabling or wrapping around power cabling. This is not the most likely cause of your problem, but is a possible solution in some cases of your symptoms & basically free to try (so worth doing first, rather than after, replacing parts on your TV).
  2. Bad input or processing circuitry inside your TV. Wide vertical lines showing up on your display are indicative of failed/failing display circuitry, or failure between the signal going into the TV and getting to the display circuitry. On a plasma TV, after the signal gets to the processors, the picture is split in half then processed separately and then recombined. A very common problem for plasma tv's is a horizontal line or lines in the middle of the screen, caused by a failure of the processing board that is responsible for coordinating top and bottom display. Your case involves a vertical noise line or lines, which does rule that particular board out - the problem is before that stage. Unfortunately, if your can't find a problem and easily solve it in your signal path, the next stage is returning the TV for IC troubleshooting and servicing.

One relevant thing you didn't mention in your post is whether this display problem occurs regardless of input source. If the problem occurs with DVDs as much as cable/sat then the problem can only be the TV (or av receiver of all sources lead there first.) If it never occurs through DVD then the cable/sat box is in question as well as the TV.

Similarly, If all sources DO go to an AV receiver before the TV, then the fault could be in the AV receiver. I myself have returned a Harmon Kardon AV receiver after 6 months, when its HDMI circuitry failed. In my case I lost all video function, but be sure that failing circuitry will cause intermittent video interference such as in your case as well.

To thoroughly troubleshoot your setup yourself before calling in the techs, you nee to simplify your signal path to the TV to confirm it is the weakest link: unplug everything, plug the TV directly into your video source (DVD for ex). Play it until you see the lines. Plug it directly into an antenna or cable (no box). Play it until your see the lines. Now you know it's the tv. If you had fresh cables with no power interference issues and good connections, you now know it is the TV for certain.

I hope that helps

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. These kind of issues in Plasma TVs are caused by overheating. To check what is bad, you'll have to open the back of the unit and check for any bulged/bad capacitors on the Y-Sus board along with the control board. As the sound is working fine so I dont think this is the power supply board which is causing this issue. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Permanent Vertical Line on my Sony Bravia 46 inch LCD TV

What you're describing is usually the result of an improperly seated connector. With the power disconnected, open the tv and locate any connectors between the LCD screen and the driver circuit board. Unplug them, and reconnect it assuring it's properly and firmly seated. Be careful when handling these cables as they tend to be quite fragile... take your time.

Green vertical line on videocon 42inch plasma tv

Hello Depending how wide the line is their could be two possible causes.
I have two questions for you.
1. How wide is the line.
2. Does it run from top of screen to bottom of screen?
If the line is thin a single strait line then it is possible the PDP has gone Bad (Panel). (Screen). The screen will to be replaced.
If the line is at least 2 or more inches wide then its a buffer board which can be replaced. LG calls this board Hand insert Boards or display driver boards..

Parallel vertical lines through left side of Panasonic Plasma tv

This sounds like one of the driver boards at the bottom or top of the screen has an intermittent fault. The set will have to be taken in to a service centre.
