Question about ViewSonic Computers & Internet

2 Answers

My 20" widescreen viewsonic LCD (VA1930WM) monitor has stopped working. When I boot my machine the start screen flashes and then the monitor goes blank. As the boot process continues, each new page flashes briefly then the screen goes blank. When I finally get to my desktop there is no screen. I have a dual monitor video card and 2 monitors. I have tried switching the monitors and aslo tried plugging the bad monitor into each output. The other monitor works fine on both outputs and both cables, so I am sure it is the monitor. Can it be repaired? How much might it cost? I pair just over $200 about 3 yrs ago.

Hi, thanks for responding to my post.

I was mistaken about the size of the monitor. It is indeed a 19 inch monitor. After a tip from another response and reviewing similar behavior by other users, I believe the problem is due to a bad capacitor in the monitor. I will look into having it repaired locally.

    Regards,

    Neil

Thank you for the advice. I have seen new models for a little over $100. Based on your experience I may just go for a new one. It's a shame to throw this nice monitor in the trash though.

This is most likely a power supply failure, many many places offer a fixed repair price, for instance i have just seen a local PC shop offer monitor fixes for a flat $50.00. So look about for deals like that.
But usually when they break i recommend that a NEW unit be purchased as these days they are very very cheap 2nd hand and even new, and a new unit has a warranty too.
I get monitors all the time in my shop, and usually they are NOT economically repairable, often due to the fact that one cannot obtain parts for units much over a year or so old.
Also usually again, with experience and practical experience and according to the figures, a unit that faults, has 70% chance of faulting again after repaired within the next 6 months, as usually it has been stressed and something else will fail.
So my advice is to get a "Quote" for the repair from a good service center and go from there.

It may be best to get your monitor warrantied by view sonic. according to the "specs" tab directly from view sonic it comes with a three year warranty. HERE is the link directly from view sonic. not sure why it says 19 inch bit it has has the same model number you gave. go to the web page, click on the "specs" tab and scroll down to the bottom ant it will tell you it has a three year warranty. Use the "contact us" link at the bottom of the page to get the support number

Very typical of View Sonic. Sounds like a back backlight or inverter. I would go to www.viewsonic.com and open up a RMA. Most view sonic screens have a 3 year warranty. They will repair at no cost ..(if it is within that period) There is a date code on the back of the screen that will help you validate the above information.

Viewsonic LCD?
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

You need to isolate the problem to see if there's a problem with the monitor or with the sound card of the computer.

To isolate this problem, please try the steps below:

1. Make sure that the monitor is properly connected to the computer.
2. Check the volume of the monitor and the volume properties of the computer.
3. Try to connect your monitor into a known working computer.
