    Angelo,

Thank you for your quick response.

What you described is the basic and standard procedure and I have been using wireless routers doing the same way as you described. The problem I am having right now is that when I double click the wireless icon in the Sys tray it first asks you to select the network id, then in the next screen it is asking me the ownership number which is a number on the back of my router(this is not common with other routers).Once I give this number, it then retrieves my network id,WEP settings, and the password I setup on my router by logging to 192.168.0.1.

The next thing is it looks like it is connected but then dropping the connection and combing back to square one.

I tried changing the password key and rebooting my laptops, now the only way I am connected is by wire.

    Appreciate some more input.

    Thanks

    Raju

    The model is DLink DIR628.

  • rajujampana Sep 05, 2010

Thanks for the response. I tried the hard reset. And changing the cable couldnot be a problem as one of my laptops was working. The problem started when I tried to add a new work laptop to the network.

it is asking for Device Ownership password, and as I see it in other forums, it is not so uncommon and not a sursprise. What is not working for me is the next step. After it accepts the said password it is retreving the routner information including my password and it's showing in a text file which i can save on my laptop. I need the next further expert advise. This is not a simple router connecting problem which I can handle. I need expert advise from the Gurus.

    Hi Experts,

As I mentioned I have done all basic things like soft reset, hard reset, plugging and unplugging. I needed some thing more advanced from the forum. Finally I called up the Dlink support and was prepared to pay for the call as I am out of free Tech support period. Fortunately they resolved the issue and didn't charge me.

The problem was my windows Wireless Zero configuration service was not running. For some reason that was turned off. When I started the service it is working.

    Thanks for your responses.

Have you tried doing a factory reset of the modem? There is a reset button on the back, its a small pinhole and you need to press it for 10 seconds until the router restarts.

Also, if you have a spare ethernet cable, replace the one being used now because it is also possible that a bad cable could cause dropped connections.

Hi. I am not sure where did you get the notification that asks you to give the ownership number. Anyway, here's standard procedure on how to connect a laptop to a wireles router. Please check your procedure again.

Connect a Laptop to a Wireless Router Using a Windows Operating System
  1. 1 Purchase a wireless router that fits your needs and price range.
  2. 2 Follow the router's manual to set up the router and its Internet connection, which will probably require connecting a wired client to the router. Once the wireless router is set up, the wired connection is no longer necessary. However, it's best to leave the wired client connected if it's a separate computer from that on which you're going to set up WiFi. If something goes wrong, you can access the administration interface again.
  3. 3 Gather information from the setup process. In order to set up the wireless client, you will need to know the service set identifier (SSID), the Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) key and the channel and mode.
  4. 4 Boot up the laptop and plug in the WiFi card. This will not be necessary if your laptop has an integrated WiFi card.
  5. 5 Install any drivers needed to use the WiFi card. Insert the disc that came with the WiFi card and follow the on-screen installation process. Most discs will trigger a new hardware wizard that makes installation extremely simple.
  6. 6 Double-click on the "WiFi Connection" icon. It can be found in the system tray at the bottom of the laptop screen.
  7. 7 Click on "Properties."
  8. 8 Select the "Wireless Networks" tab.
  9. 9 Use the "Add" button at the bottom of the dialog if your WiFi network isn't in the "Available Networks" section.
  10. 10 Click on "Configure" when you see your network's SSID in the "Available Networks."
  11. 11 Enter your network's SSID and WEP key.
  12. 12 Click on "Start," then choose "Connect To" and "Wireless Network Connection." Your computer should now be able to access the WiFi network. If the WiFi network is connected to the Internet, it should also be able to connect to the Internet.

Installing dlink password into printer

The encryption password is in the D-Link's wireless settings.
Connect a LAN cable from the D-Link to your laptop/computer's LAN port, open the browser on your laptop/computer and enter the D-Link's configuration URL..
http://192.168.0.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = blank (just press Enter) You can now change the default admin password.
You can now configure the wireless settings. Now configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wireless settings. I have a d link d1 514 router. I'm unable to open 192.168.0.1. if i put the internet connection wire in LAN then I'm able to get internet access using cable but if i put the wire in wan, I'm not getting...

carry out the resetting of the dlink router
then use lan cable to gain access to dlink router,
set up the internet conenction (i.e. your internet provider modem plugged into the dlink router also)

if it has a built in wizard then just follow the on screen instructions

you will need to define SSID (wireless network name) and passkey (password for the wireless connection)

and the your done. disconnect the laptop from wired connection and connect via wireless

Laptop cannot aquire network address from wireless router

If you connect the computer to the router , it works.
That means the wired connection is OK.
Open the set up page of the router check the wireless settings of the router.
I think your network is secured and you are not typing the correct network key.
just open the router set up and check the wireless settings .
Make sure that the DHCP server on the router is enabled

I just got a laptop and I was trying to get online with my di-624

Hi,
default username : admin
password : leave it blank
log into router GUI and change the wep key, make it to 64 bit key as thats much easy to remember or you can go for WAP and can use any password(alphabetic or alphanumeric)

If that doesn't work, reset the router from the bottom reset button.
and reconfigure your router.

Hope this works.
Your feedback is appreciated.

Unable to connect to internet

The IP address 192.168.0.1 you use with your browser is not to get into the Dlink WEB page, it is to get into the DLink router configuration, to set up the router and wireless security eg. network SSID, turn off SSID brocast, WEP/WAP encryption, MAC address filtering etc.

Wireless router

Yes, you can use wireless router with the modem. I guess the actiontech DSl router that you have is also Wireless one. If so, you can use just the DSL router for wireless connection. If you really want to use Dlink router with it, Connect the ( WAN port ) of the Dlink router to the ( LAN Port ) of the Action tech modem [ modem(LAN)-->Dlink(WAN) ]. Once you do this connection, better to do power cycle ( unplug the pwr to the dlink first, then, disconnect the pwr to action tech - wait 1min and plug the pwr to modem, wait for DSL light to be solid , then put the pwr back to dlink ). Make sure DSL light on the modem solid, internet light & WLAN light on the link glowing.
- Make Hardwire connection between the computer to Dlink and check the ip address on the computer whether it acquires the ip address from Dlink and then check the internet connection on the computer, it has to work. if computer not getting ip from dlink, try restarting computer.
- If hardwire connection on the dlink works fine and check the wireless connection.

For wireless configuration or assistance you may check this link:

please feel free to ask, if you have any more assistance.
