Question about Flat Panel Televisions

1 Answer

Power Supply? First of all, I am well aware of all the dangers of television repair. Secondly, if I wanted to take it to a shop I would have done so. What I need is highly detailed, step by step instructions and a place to order the part(s). Now, that being said, when I turn on the TV you can here the power "click" on, but there is no power light and the screen stays dark. I suspect it is the power supply. Can the power supply simply be replaced without any re-programming/re-setting of any chip(s)? My Emerson Model CR202EM8 is less than five months old, and the other day, it stopped working. I screwed up and sprayed some bug spray on top of the tv and it ran down inside one of the vents. After that, once I turned it off, it wouldn't come back on. When I turned it on and then back off, I could hear a faint noise from inside, like something was winding down. A friend of mine, who is supposedly an electronics engineer, took it apart and said that there's a small processor inside that has shorted out, but the entire board (thinks it's called a processor board, but not the main one) has to be replaced, as that one processor can't be replaced individually in this particular tv. I've tried and tried to find this part online (without a part number) with no success. I'm not even 100% sure that he is right about what the part is actually called. I'm ready to give up and just go buy another tv!

That is the best idea I've heard all day. The majority of the individual parts in LCD,s and Plasma's are not available, they come as complete board assembly's. There is no telling who made Emerson. You may find a mfg part number on a chip but when you do the part research you will find manufacturing companies that only sell by the "thousands" they sell these only to the tv manufacturers. If you could get the IC anything above 85 pin you will not be able to replace. These were installed by robotics.

Have vizio vp50 part#1014350022 went to turn it on and nothing no lite sound or anything.Tried the reset nothing any ideas. thank you

The first thing to check is if your power outlets have surge protector breakers. Try plugging in another simple appliance like a lamp into the outlet and make sure the outlet has power.
If the outlet is fine try plugging in the TV and listening very carefully from the back of the TV for a subtle click noise. The power supply has a mechanical relay that switches when the TV receives power. If you can not hear the click and there are no stand by or power lights illuminated then you likely have a power supply problem. This could range from a blown fuse to a bad capacitor up to a burnt out power regulator. Anything more serious than those problems may warrant simply replacing the whole power supply. Depending on your TV that board could cost anywhere from $50-$175. The power supply can be tested using a multimeter to determine if it is the source of the problem but this should not be attempted unless you have some electroics repair training and are aware of the dangers involved in working on high voltage electronics.

Our tv will not come on. Has no power and no lights. It was working fine and out of nowhere nothing. It is a March 2007 tv. What could be the problem.

First of all check the power cable and the power at the wall outlet. If these are ok the n the problem is with your tvs SMPS power supply. Power supply board is one which regulates and provide the required voltages to the other sections of the tv. SMPS is one of the most dangerous part in tv. Because chances to get electric shock. if you are not aware of electronics you cant rectify the problem. Better to consult some person who knows to repair the same.

Trying to turn the TV on, the green light comes on briefly and then goes to red. It takes many attempts to get the tv on.

This is a typical problem for several Akai/Ilo models that utilize the MLT169A Main Power Supply. Your choices are to Replace the power supply (about $100 yourself. Repair the power supply If you are an electronics technician. Or for the "money is no object" wealthy, take it to a local repair shop and expect to pay in excess of $300. Just be aware that the problem will most likely return in the near future. I am on my 3rd PS in 2 years, 1 lasted only 61 days.

Power Supply replacement

It's not difficult, but it's dangerous. Your best bet is to look for a repair person right here on Fixya - just click on the link that says My Products above, and it's cake from there.
It's a quick process, and it shouldn't run you too much more than  the 252 you already spent... and you're saving yourself the risk of electrocution. Those parts are crammed in there like a game of Tetris.
Good luck!
