SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

The solution disk for my sd870is is now outdated, so I cannot download my pictures anymore. what to do?

Get a card reader for your computer, if it doesn't already have one. The card will then appear as another hard drive, and you can transfer photos the same way you transfer any other kind of files.

Using a card reader is also likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer/

Canon SD870IS loaded with Poloaroid 32GB. Cannot download from camera to computer. On camera indicates"communication error"

You camera is Not brand new, and can work with SD cards. The card you did insert is at least a SDHC card, and could be a SDXC card.
When no firmware update was delivered from Canon, with the possibility to read and write SDHC cards, you can't use these cards.
The max you can use is a 4GB SD card, but it could be difficult to find one, because most firms now make 4 GByte SDHC cards.

My canon power shot sd870is digital camera suddenly will not allow me to download pictures

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

Canon SD870IS LCD is very dark

Most likely the display backlight fuse is blown. You will have to give it to a local repair shop or Canon service center. They will give you the price.
