Have you tried taking off the cover to see if the disc is spinning inside when you get this message? The motor that spins the disc could be shot.

Have you tried taking off the cover to see what's going on inside the case? The same problem happened with mine and I found the discs didn't spin when I tried to play them. There's a motor that spins the DVD or CD directly (there are no belts or gears attached to that motor). I was able to start the disc spinning by giving it a nudge by hand, but it still spun sluggishly and I got the same message on screen. The motor could be shot, so you might try replacing it, but I don't know where you can get one.

My sony DVP-NS725P will not play discs

Run a DVD disc cleaner through it and see if that helps. If not then open it up and manually clean the laser pickup lens. Then give it a go. If that didn't help, then open it back up and replace the optical drive.

What is a good burn program for this DVD player? I have tried 3 different programs, and all them will not play in the dvd player. I have a MAC.

The Mac and software is not the problem. The Sony DVD player is the culprit. Sony has some proprietary bullsh.t lock hardwired into their system to not play burned discs.

Go on e-bay and look for region free DVD players, which will play any disc like a champ. Sony is a good brand, but they are picky about playing certain discs. Re-gift this thing to someone during Christmas or sell it.

Dvp ns725p says: cannot play this disc

Is it for all discs or just certain types of discs? Some DVD players simply cannot play some formats unfortunately. Often, the issue is with burned DVD-R or DVD+R discs or CD Video. Sometimes it's simply a matter of a bad burn. Refer to your manual as to the formats compatible with your player.

DVP-NS30 shows "CANNOT PLAY" message when DVD inserted

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if the DVD player cannot read or play the inserted disc.
  1. Ensure the inserted disc is compatible with the DVD player.IMPORTANT: Refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product for a list of compatible disc. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
  2. Use a soft cloth to clean the disc.
  3. Examine the disc for any cracks or scratches that might be interfering with playback.
  4. Attempt to play another disc.NOTES:
    • If another disc plays in the DVD player, then the previous disc is faulty.
    • Some recordable discs may not play correctly because of the quality of the recording, the physical condition of the disc, or the characteristics of the recording device or authoring software used.

  5. Remove the disc from the DVD player.
  6. Turn off the DVD player.
  7. Unplug the power cord of the DVD player from the AC outlet.
  8. Let the DVD player remain without power for 1 minute.
  9. Plug the power cord back into the AC outlet.
  10. Turn on the DVD player.
  11. Insert the disc into the DVD player.
  12. Attempt to play the disc.
If still persists, its time for your device to get serviced.

Cannot Play message on a Sony DVP-CX995V

hi...
Probably dust in the reader/lens assembly.
Needs to be opened and cleaned.
Sony also has a firmware update for the unit.
