TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

If that doesn't do it, please append a comment to this post and we'll go on from there.

Calculator turns on, but cannot turn off and no other buttons work.

If the TI-84 does not function even though you are sure that the
batteries are fresh, you can try manually resetting it by following steps:

1. Remove all of the AAA batteries from the graphing handheld

2. Press and hold the ON key for ten seconds

3. Replace the batteries

4. Turn on the unit

When you reset your graphing handheld, the contrast sometimes
changes. If the screen is faded or blank, adjust the contrast by
pressing 2nd and releasing up-arrow or down-arrow keys.

If you cannot see anything on the screen, you may need to adjust the graphing TI 84 calculator contrast :

1.To darken the screen, press and release 2nd key, and then press and hold up-arrow key until the display is sufficiently dark.

2. To lighten the screen, press and release 2nd key, and then press and hold Down-arrow key until the display is sufficiently light.

My TI-84 plus silver edition calculator crashed after my little sister held the "2nd" button and then pressed the down arrow key. The screen showed a 4, 3, 2, 1 countdown and then blanked out. I...

If your little sister did as you say, then the logical way to handle the problem is to revert the process.
  1. Press [2nd] button and release it.
  2. Press and HOLD the UpArrow.
  3. As you keep pressing, the top right of the screen will show a series a number, starting with 3 maybe, as you cannot see the 1 or 2, and the display will darken.
  4. Maintain pressure on, till the display is to your liking.

I dropped my TI-84 calculator, and now when I turn it on, I can't see anything.

If you are lucky, you might just have dislodged the batteries. Verify that contact is made correctly. Then adjust the screen contrast.
Turn calculator ON (Just press the ON key once)
Press '2nd' button and release it.
Press and HOLD the 'UpArrow' key.
Keep pressing the arrow key until the screen darkens.

You can try other procedures described on this very website. Look for questions I posted answers to.

If that fails to restore your calculator, you should contact TI at the address ti-cares@ti.com

Battery change tI - 84

TI calculators have an unpleasant habit of losing screen contrast whenever batteries are replaced, so that the blank screen looks exactly like it's off.

Turn the calculator on (though you won't necessarily see anything). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for five seconds or so.

My TI-84 Plus calculator won't work. It won't switch off by itself. When the batteries are reinserted, it says that all RAM has been cleared. When i press the 'ON' button again, the screen clears. but...

The Ram cleared message is normal after you change batteries. When you see this message you press the CLEAR button to erase it. You do not press the ON button again because the calculator is already ON. If you want to turn calculator OFF you press [2nd][ON] (OFF).

On certain calculators, pressing the ON button when calculator is already ON is interpreted as INTERRUPT the current command.
