Question about Dryers

1 Answer

I have an electric kenmore 600 dryer. The problem is the motor does not spin. The light comes on, the heating element gets hot and I checked the belt and it is not broke. I believe I have a bad motor I just don't understand the electric schematic well enough to be able to check for power at the motor. Does the start side of the motor require 240V? Not sure what to check next Thanks

Dryer does not heat correctly code F31

The thermostat which is a round 2 wire control on the blower box on the back of the dryer controls the heat on all dryers. always shut off power when checking any electrical appliance. Clothes dryers are wired with 2 voltages, The 240 volt supply is for the heating element only, while the 120 volt supply gives power to the timer and motor that spins the drum and powers any lights and switches. If the heating element is coming on, try replacing the thermostat. As always unplug the dryer first.

Kenmore 600 Electric dryer won't heat up. I have replaced the Thermostat and Heating Element. No heat. What should I do next.

You could have a timer problem or an electrical problem. Unplug the dryer. Find the wire that connects from timer to heating element. Disconnect it from that terminal and clamp a lead from an ohm meter there. Then test for continuity from that terminal to any other terminal of that timer while turning the dial to various spots. If you cannot get a reading then you have a bad timer.themobilian_859.jpg
The motor is a 120 volt one. The motor runs off neutral and one side of the 30 amp two pole circuit breaker. You might be fooled into thinking you have power to the element but you may not have it.

Heating element heats up, but dryer will not spin.

Since you stated that the heating element is heating up I believe it rules out the thermal switches.
When you push the start button does it make the motor make any noise? Maybe hear the motor humming? Two things to check for are Broken Belt or Bad Motor:
This requires common sense and since you are going to be bypassing the safety features you need be CAREFUL.

First, with door open, manually press in door switch to by-pass door safety, then press "start", try to manually start the dryer by spinning the drum by hand, If you hear the motor humming but it does not start spinning on it's own; most likely it is a broken belt which can be changed without much difficulty for less than $15 bucks. NOW if it then continues to spin on it's own GET YOUR HAND OUT OF THERE and close the door; you have a bad motor and even though it started it needs to be replaced. A motor for that is available for just under $100 bucks and is not to bad to replace, I would recommend replacing the belt at the same time since you will be in there. Good Luck!

It almost has to be the belt as the heating element won't come on without the motor turning.
